Paul Versteeg Obituary

C.M. Paul Versteeg

St. George

On November 1, 1930, the third son of Jan Willem and Frederika Reemeijer Versteeg was born in The Hague, Netherlands. He was given the name Cornelis Marius Paul Versteeg in honor of his childless Uncle Cornelis and Aunt Paulina Maria Versteeg. He has always been called Paul. Paul passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2013.

With his family he experienced the challenges of the WWII German occupation of Holland. In 1949 he immigrated to Canada, where he hoped to one day become a farm owner. However, his hopes were completely dashed when he was stricken with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, which left him unable to pursue his dream. He settled in Vancouver, British Columbia working in various maintenance occupations. It was a proud day when on May 31, 1956 he became a Canadian Citizen. In 1973, his friend Lorna introduced him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After study with the missionaries he was baptized, a decision to which he has been ever faithful and never deviated. A week following his baptism he met his future wife, Betty Louise Moyle, at a church activity. A friendship ensued and on October 3, 1974, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. They became the parents of one son, "Cory" - Cornelis Moyle Paul Versteeg.

In 1987, the family moved to Laie, Hawaii, where Paul was employed at the Polynesian Cultural Center. He has served in various Church callings including thirteen years as an ordinance worker in the Laie Hawaii Temple. With his wife he served two years as a Member Location Missionary. Not enough can be said to express Paul's love of our Savior Jesus Christ and his Gospel. He accepted it and he lived it. He was a man of kindness, honesty and patience, who never complained of life's limitations.

He leaves his wife, Betty of St. George; son, Cory and daughter-in-law Hang of West Valley City; sister, Debby (Hans) Brouwer of Orlando, Florida; and many nieces and nephews in the United States and the Netherlands. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Hans and Theo Versteeg.

The family wishes to thank those who have extended much kindness and assistance during the past months to caring for Paul, including the staff at Spring Gardens and Horizons Hospice. The love of friends, neighbors, our Bishop and Home Teachers has been most appreciated.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Cotton Manor Ward Chapel, 2583 East 350 North, St. George, Utah. I knew Paul and Betty in Vancouver when I was a missionary there. Sister Moyle was a worker in the mission home and I was on the mission staff there when Paul started their romance. They are both great people and Paul had a heart that was huge and good. He was gentle and kind and carried a wonderful spirit. My prayers are with his family at this time.

Paul with his wife Betty on the 1st of November 2008.
