Allison Simons Obituary

COLUMBIA — Allison Pauline “Polly” Pow Simons, 91, resident at the Saluda Nursing Center, Saluda, SC, died Saturday, December 19, 2009.

She was born September 24, 1918 in the Sardis Church Community of Saluda County. She was the daughter of the late Issac Edward and Farrah Mae Jennings Pow. Polly moved to Columbia at age 18 to attend business college. She was a longtime employee of, and retired from, Seastrunk Electric Company, also in Columbia. She was one of the first residents of the Carolina Apartments, and lived there for 25 years, until health dictated she could no longer live alone. Polly was a Past President and Life Member of Women In Construction. Since 1960, she was an active member, Sunday School teacher, and leader in the Women’s Missions Organizations at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, (now New Heights Church).

Mrs. Simons was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Simons (1961); son, Henry Simons (1971); daughter, Farrah Simons Stiener (1999); sisters, Mary Lou Merchant and Ellie Maud Bartly; and brother, Fred Pou.

She is survived by her son, Andy Simons and his wife Susan, their children, Laura Blackmon (Kevin) and Allison Snyder (Joe); a son-in-law, Rick Stiener; her brother, Frank Pow; and sister, Milie Rinehart.

Polly was rich in family and friends and had an active church life. She was fortunate to be employed where people cared about her. She found great joy in giving gifts to others. Late in her life she would joke that many of her friends and family were in heaven, and they must be wondering where she was. She is with them today.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009 at Sardis Baptist Church, 204 Sardis Rd., Saluda, SC 29138 with Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. Dennis Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior in the church social hall.

Memorials may be made to the Church Missions Organization of your choice.

Ramey Funeral Home of Saluda, SC, is assisting the family.

This is a beautiful testament to a wonderful family. I have lots of memories of Grandma Simons and am blessed to have known her. You are all in our prayers this week. Love you!

Andy, We are so sad to hear of Polly's passing. We both loved her so much. We feel she was a part of our family for so many years. Grady looked forward to her "birthday wishes" every year. She never forgot. Please know she remains in our hearts and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. Grady and Lynn Slice

Andy, We are so very sorry. Aunt Edith remembers the times when the photo of Aunt Polly was taken. The article about Aunt Polly is perfect. Take care. We are thinking of all of you. Love, Aunt Edith and Little Nora

Andy, Your Mother and Father were Aunt Polly and Uncle Bill to me growing up, as they were dear friends of my parents Joe and Mary Hall. Your Mother's sweet smile and laugh have always stayed with me, the picture here is the way that I remember her. We stayed in touch somewhat and I still remember her so fondly. She was a strong woman who overcame so many tragedies in life and still kept her gentle spirit and faith. My love and sympathies to you and your family. Love, JoAnn Hall Helms

Our thoughts, and prayers go out to the family of this awesome lady. When I worked at The Hardware store in Saluda Millie, and her would frequently come by to check on their nephews' Paul, and Jerry. I'm sure they traveled the state visiting all their relatives. Her example of love will live on in the lives she touched. Earth's loss is Heaven's gain.
