Angelo Manos Obituary

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Angelo Basil Manos, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with Trisaghion Prayers at 7:30 p.m. Pallbearers are Joe Gilmore, Jon Hollingsworth, Bert Moore, Dr. Mark Newman, George Nickas, Paul Tsalapatas, Terry Tsiantis and Angelo Trifos.

Mr. Manos fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, December 6, 2009. Born in Detroit, he was a son of the late Peter John and Antonia Georgileas Manos. He attended Western High School in Detroit and was on the 1944-45 city championship football teams. As a result of the championships, he sat with the Detroit Lions during two home games in 1944 and 1945. Angelo remembered this as one of his proudest moments and was a lifelong Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines fan. He graduated from Columbia High School and the City College of Detroit and attended the University of South Carolina. He served in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed fishing and travel, especially his recent trip to Greece with his son and grandson. He worked as a courier at the Nexsen Pruet law firm and, for many years, worked at the Elite Epicurean Restaurant and Elite Foods. A member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, he was also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Surviving are a son, Marcus Angelo Manos (Rose) of Columbia; grandchildren, Nicholas Angelo Manos, Rebecca Nicole Chandler and Jessica Rose Pettengill, all of Columbia; brother, Dr. John P. Manos (Katina) of Charleston; and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor Vivian Wilson Manos, and a brother, George Manos.

Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 1931 Sumter St., Columbia, SC 29201 or the Animal Protection League of South Carolina, PO Box 5354, Columbia, SC 29250.

I remember Angelo introducing me to Crown Royal. I remember him and my father swapping tall tales around the dining room table. Most of all, I remember his kindness when my brother passed away. I wish I was there to honor his memory in person. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

The smile of your father and his sincere personality will always be my memory of this Christian man. He taught me so many practical things to help me as a newcomer to Columbia. When he cut fish for me to purchase, he always told me exactly how to cook it. Angelo taught others with his caring heart. I will miss him at the Greek Festivals.
