Bettye G. Carson COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Bettye G. Carson, 81, of Columbia, will be held 1 pm Tuesday at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Ellen Skidmore and Pastor Joe Stines officiating. Burial will follow the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 10, 2012 from 6 - 8 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel 4219 Hard Scrabble Rd., Columbia, SC 29223 Bettye G. Carson, 81, died Friday, December 7, 2012 unexpectedly at her home. Born in Pelahatchie, Mississippi she was the daughter of Charles Word Gilliland and Ina Ruth Robbins Gilliland. Bettye and her parents travelled a good bit during her youth due to her father's work. Eventually they settled in Knoxville, Tennessee where she attended the University of Tennessee and met the love of her life, Judson L. "Jay" Carson. After several years in Columbia, Bettye took on a paper route for The State Newspaper which she held for more than 25 years - bringing her well into her 70's. She was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church since 1969 where she later became a member of the women's Circles 3 and 5. Bettye enjoyed NASCAR and loved watching Dancing with The Stars. Her true enjoyment came from spending time with her grandchildren, wherever that might be - at home, or at one of their many different sporting events. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Skinner and her husband Dennis of Elgin; sons, Steve Carson and his wife Lee of Columbia, Bill Carson and his wife Lisa of Elgin, Bob Carson of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Lori Carson of Chapin; grandchildren, Kristen, Brittany, Judson, Brooke, Bo, Matt, Tanner, and Reese Carson; Katie, Leslie, Lauren and Carson Skinner; Savannah and Ryan Humphries; and Hayley Bleckler. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, son, Gary Carson and grand-son Brandon Carson. Memorials may be made to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 North Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206.
