Carl Hust Obituary

Carl M. Hust

November 12, 1930 - November 10, 2024

Clinton, South Carolina - Carl M. Hust, 94, formally of Columbia, SC, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024. Carl resided at the Presbyterian Community in Clinton, SC. Carl was born October 12, 1930, in Beaumont, TX, the son of Boyce Dycus Hust and Mildred Morris Hust.

Carl was honorably discharged in 1955 from the United States Air Force after serving his country during the Korean War. After his service was completed, he attended North Greenville College where he played basketball and later graduated from Furman University. Carl started his career in public service with the City of Greenville as Parks and Recreation Director. After a move to Columbia, he gave 32 years of distinguished service to the State of South Carolina in the roles of Director of the SC Recreation Commission and Director of Recreation Division for PRT. He continued to serve South Carolina as Executive Director of The Senior Sports Foundation. Upon retirement from the State, he served many years on the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, Palmetto Health Foundation Board and was a lifetime member of the Saluda Shoals Foundation.

Carl served as a member of the Lexington/Richland School District 5 school board for 16 years and two terms as Chairman. He also served on the Board of the National Senior Games Association, U.S. Olympic Committee, the National Senior Health and Fitness Foundation, as well as the National Recreation and Park Association Board of Trustees. Coach Hust lead the 1956 Baseball Team from Greenville, SC, to be the National Champions of the First Dixie Youth World Series.

Carl was blessed to receive multiple awards. One of those being the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolinas highest civilian award. He also received Recreation Professional of the Year, South Carolina Recreation and Park Society Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Senior Games Association.

Carl was a Faithful Member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where he and Carol were Charter Members. Carl served in many capacities within Riverland Hills over the 62 years of his membership. He was a member of the Deacon Board, served on multiple committees and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. The most important thing to Carl was serving other people and loving them as Jesus does. There is no doubt that he was welcomed with well done my good and faithful servant as he entered his eternal home.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Boyce Dycus Hust and Mildred Morris McKinney. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol McGee Hust. Carl and Carol shared 64 amazing years together. He is survived by his children, Laurel Runager, Chuck Hust (Anne), Hope Hinnant (Keith); five grandchildren, Justin Runager (Meredith), Ansley Runager, Philip Hust (Suzanna), Austin Brown (Katelyn), Rachel Renzulli (Josh); four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sandra McGee Brown; and a host of extended family that he loved dearly.

I met Karl at Lexington School District Five. He was instantly the perfect gentleman! He always put the needs of others, especially the students, first. I was on the Education Foundation and found Karl to be a great help to the district in more than one way.
Later, his daughter, Laurie Runager, became our son's third -grade teacher. Laurie showed so much care and interest in growing her students and we are forever grateful that she taught our Michael. He became a very, very successful accountant in adult life. He owns his own accounting consulting firm. Many sweet memories, Laurie. He loved you so! You got him over the hump !

Karl and Carol were friends at Riverland Hills Baptist, where we are members. They often told us how the kids and grandkids were doing and how proud they were to know they turned out to be good and kind christian people.

I tried to find Karl a couple of years ago with no luck. I just see the service listed and have missed it. I would have come to extend love and peace to a lift so well -lived. Rest in Peace, sweet man. We all loved you. Jesus goes before us all.
