Carole Poyner Obituary
September 12, 1936 - September 4, 2025
Atlanta, Georgia - Carole Whitney Poyner passed away peacefully at home in Smyrna, GA with her family on September 4th, 2025.
Born on September 12,1936 in Atlanta, GA to Naomi and Robert Whitney, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
After graduating from University of Georgia, Carole went on to teach first grade for 25 years. She later worked as Director of Volunteer Service Programs for both the American Red Cross and Senior Resources in Columbia, SC.
She was known for her kindness, compassion, empathy, quick wit, love for animals and shopping, zest for life and fun. Above all, Carole was deeply devoted to her family, friends and her loyal pup Gritz.
Predeceased by her husband Alvin Quinton Poyner, Jr. ( Sonny ), parents, and brother Robert Whitney, Jr.
Lovingly remembered by her daughter Lori, Sean Sullivan, son Sonny , grandchildren Carlee and Jake Pokalsky, sister- in- law Judy Crisp, her adored nieces and nephews, and many dear cousins and friends.
The family would also like to express sincere gratitude to Carole's dedicated caregiver Latirria Daniel, a Certified Nursing Assistant who provided compassionate care and much joy during her final years.
A memorial service will be held in Columbia, SC in the coming months; announcements will follow. Carole's ashes will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, GA.

I worked with Carole at the American Red Cross. Carole was such a kind, gentle, sweet lady. I am blessed to have known her. My condolences to her family and prayers.
