Born September 10, 1922, in Columbia, to the late Charles Guy Castles Sr. and Mary Elizabeth White Castles, he was the loving and faithful husband of the late Leone Strickland Castles. Dr. Castles graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1942 and the Medical College of South Carolina in 1946. Upon graduation, he served his country as a physician in the United States Navy.

Dr. Castles dedicated his life to pediatrics and delivered outstanding and compassionate healthcare to his patients. He was beloved by his patients and by those with whom he worked. Dr. Castles founded Pediatric Associates, P.A. in Columbia in 1952, where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1987. During his career, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Old Columbia Hospital and played a critical role in establishing the Richland Memorial Hospital on its present campus. He subsequently served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Richland Memorial Hospital for eight years. He served as President of the Columbia Pediatric Society and Co-Chair of the Polio Drive for South Carolina where he established a means to vaccinate children against polio in the school system. Dr. Castles was recognized by Richland Memorial Hospital for providing over 25 years of outstanding service and contributions to the profession. Dr. Castles served as president of the Richland Sertoma Club in 1960 -1961, during which time he established Sportsarama, which received national recognition. The Sportsarama tradition is still carried on today. Following his retirement, Dr. Castles remained active in the community serving as a volunteer with the Babcock Center in Columbia.

Dr. Castles was a devout Christian and was a faithful lifetime member of Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving for over 50 years as a deacon, ruling elder and adult Sunday school teacher. Dr. Castles was a devoted Gamecock fan and attended football games and basketball games with his family for 53 years. Known as "Junior" to his golfing buddies, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed beating his son and friends regularly. Recently, at the age of 89, he shot a 79. He loved his family and enjoyed cookouts where he made his famous homemade ice cream during the summer.

A firm believer in hard work and education, Dr. Castles was exceptionally proud of his children and their educational and professional achievements. To the whole Castle Family:

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Dr. Castles was pediatrician to me and my siblings in the 60's and 70's. "Young" Dr. Castles has been my son's pediatrician for the past 12 years. Dr. Castles was a little scary to me as a child, but as an adult, I know that there was no better doctor in Columbia. He was passionate about his beliefs because he cared so much about his patients. Thank you for sharing him with us.

You all will be in our thoughts and prayers.

To Ray, Leone and Guy and the rest of the family, I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's death. My world is much smaller for his absence in it. What a wonderful man, though I was rather frightened of him during my childhood, I came to understand how wise he was! And what a stellar example of a Christian! You all will be in my thoughts and prayers in the future.
I know he and your mom are busy setting heaven right.

Dr. Castles took care of me in the 70's and I even cried so much that his nurse Ms. Payne could not even give me a shot and Dr. C made another Doctor's nurse give it to me. Wonderful Doctor that will truly be missed! Not many more around like Dr. Guy Castles!

Dr. Castles - many times he found a "monkey" in my ear and even one or two in my daughter's ear. He had a work ethic like no other and touched so very many lives and hearts. My prayers are with his family...and to his family I along with so very many others thank you for sharing this remarkable gentleman...so many of us are alive today because of his knowledge... me for one. I never see a monkey without thinking of him and smile...what a blessing to have known him!

Dr. Castles was loved and admired by all of our family. He was a Pediatrician to me and two of my children. His son was brave enough to take on all three since he came into the pratice! I remember Dr. Castles staying at the hospital with sick children just to watch over them. My mother once told me he cried when he said he had go tell this one special mother that her fourth child was probably going to die just like the previous three. As a child I liked him best because he gave more liquid medicine than shots!! He fathered a wonderful son to follow in his footsteps and we sure love him too. My oldest child call father/son doctors Big Dr. Castles and Little Dr. Castles. I know he'll enjoy celebrating the birthday of Jesus with his wife in heaven. "Big" Dr. Castles, thanks for all YOU did and inspiring your son to follow in your Big footsteps. We'll always LOVE you!!

Dr. Castles was the best pediatrician there was. When you put your child in his care, they became his children, & you were just the caretaker, & you better do what he said. Dr. Castles, with his knowledge & expertise, saved two of my children. Heaven truly has a great person. Les Young
