Ellis was born April 4, 1924, in Charleston, SC, a son of the late Daniel Ellis Hay and Lydia Clement Hay. He was a graduate of St. Johns High School and received a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering from Clemson University. In 1950 he went to work for the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company as an Agricultural Engineer in the Charleston area, holding various positions as distribution engineer, district engineer, associate engineer, Aiken District Manager, Beaufort District Manager, and Manager of Distribution Operations in Columbia. In 1983, he retired as Vice President of Customer Operations - Northern Division. He was a member and Elder Emeritus in the Johns Island Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Presbyterian Church and served in many leadership roles in Aiken, Beaufort and Columbia. During World War II, Ellis served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a former trustee of James Island School District #3, past president of the West Ashley and St. Andrews Rotary Clubs, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, a member of the Pivot Club, and served in many civic organizations in Aiken, Beaufort and Columbia.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years; four daughters, Rose Ellis Hay Blessing (Dale) of Johns Island, SC, Lydia Lebby Hay McElmurray (Herndon) of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Anne Hay Marcengill (Sam) of Greenville, SC, and Kathryn Hay McDaniel (Randy) of Greenwood, SC; a son, Daniel Ellis Hay, III (Michele) of Charleston, SC; four sisters, Lydia H. Pedersen (Pete) of Johns Island, SC, Motte Legare Hay of Charleston, SC, Mary Hay Jenkins of Johns Island, SC and Ann Hay Thomas of Mullins, SC; a brother, E. Gordon Hay (Charlotte) of Charleston; fifteen grandchildren, Dr. Walter D. “Bo” Blessing, Jr. (Anne), Lydia B. Applegate (William), Amy M. Humphries, Kelley M. Pruitt (Noah), Dr. James H. McElmurray, III (Carletta), Kimberly T. Keyserling (Todd), James B. Timmerman, Jr. (Tara), Anna M. DeSourdy (Dave), Amanda M. Nabors (Josh), Kathryn E. McDaniel, Ellen R. McDaniel, Rebecca M. Hay and Emily W. Hay; and ten great-grandchildren. Ellis was predeceased by a brother, William C. Hay.

Mrs. Hay and Family,
Benny and I will have you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. We will see you and the family at the funeral. Benny still thought of Mr. Hay as his father-in-law. I told him he was a lucky son-in-law to have had two father-in-laws at the same time.
Mr. Hay is now with the LORd and is watching down on all of us.
