David Sligh Obituary

David Sligh BATESBURG-LEESVILLE - David Sligh, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, teacher and friend to humanity died on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at his home in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. Born in Newberry County on December 15, 1921 he was the youngest of seven children born to the late William and Ardelia Sligh. Mr. Sligh was a lifelong resident of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 3½ years. After returning from the war, he went on to graduate from Bettis Academy Junior College in 1949. He later received his Bachelor of Education from Allen University in 1951 and a Masters of Education from South Carolina State University in 1964. He was employed by the Newberry County School System for 2 years. Mr. Sligh continued his love of education by serving as Principal, Assistant Principal and teacher for Lexington County School District Three. He retired in 1985 having served the community as an educator for 35 years. Throughout his life, Mr. Sligh served the Lord as a devout Christian and member of Shiloh AME Church in Prosperity, South Carolina. He served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Chairman of the Steward Board and was honored to have been conferred the title of "Father of the Church". He was a brother to many in Twin City Lodge #316 Masons of Batesburg-Leesville, S.C.; a devoted Shriner in Cairo Court #125, Columbia, S.C.; and proud to have been conferred the 33rd Masonic Degree. He also was a member of Twin City Chapter #243, Order of the Eastern Star, Batesburg-Leesville, S.C. Mr. Sligh was united in holy matrimony to the late Lona Williams Sligh on June 15, 1942. They were happily and lovingly married for 68 glorious years. Cherishing his loving memory are his children, David Jeffery Sligh of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Arlechia (Calvin) Oakman of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, Donna Bryant of Stockbridge, Georgia; an adopted son, Timothy A. Ward of Rock Hill, South Carolina; goddaughter, Brenda J. Williams of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Tiffany and Leslie Baston, Jalik Oakman, Brandon and Phillip Swanson; six great-grandchildren, Amaria, JaMarques, Brenden, Gabriel, Aden and Jasalynn. Mr. Sligh also cherished his long time friendship with his "Right Hand Man", Mr. Johnny Jay, together, with a host of other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Shiloh AME/Building Fund, PO Box 432, Prosperity, SC 29128.
