West Columbia, South Carolina - David Wesley Wild, husband of Marcella Ann Hudson Wild, father of Dr. Stephen Wesley Wild and Dr. Mark David Wild, son of Raymond W. Wild and Ezra Mae Gaul Wild was born in Covington, KY on May 2,1936. He passed away on March 11, 2023 in West Columbia, SC.
Wild earned a BS degree in Business from the Univ. of KY. He was a member of the swim team at Lafayette High School in Lexington, KY and was captain of the University of Kentucky swim team. He received the Freeburg Memorial Award as outstanding swimmer during his time at the University, and he swam for the US Army. He was employed by Ashland Oil of KY for several years before earning an MBA degree from the University of Tennessee. He was then hired by the USPS in their management program. After serving in numerous positions for the Postal Service which included a teaching position at the USPS Postal Academy in Maryland, he was selected as Postmaster of Charleston, SC. He served as Sectional Center Manager for several years as well as Postmaster. He was Postmaster in Charleston from 1981 to 2002 when he retired.
In the fall of 1961 the 100th Army Reserve Unit was called to active duty. Wild was sent to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas for one year. SGT Wild was assigned to the Regimental Instructor Group as a Senior Military Instructor. Wild served as NCOIC of the gas chamber. During the summer of 1962, SGT Wild served as NCOIC of the Fort Swimming Pool and Captain of the Fort Swimming Team representing Fort Chaffee in all swimming events.
Wild was active in the Boy Scouts of America program and was Institutional Representative of all Scouting programs at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. One of his proudest moments was when both his sons became Eagle Scouts. He served as Deacon and Elder in many Presbyterian Churches as he and his family moved with the USPS. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Stephen (Michelle), Mark (Jennie), grandsons Mark David, Jr., Blake, Gavin, and Tommy Wild.
Committal Service will be at 10 AM Friday (17th) at Fort Jackson. Memorial Service at 11:30 AM Friday, Chapel of the Holy Spirit - Still Hopes, Reception following Service at Noon, Mansion
