Dean Willie Lloyd Harriford, Jr. COLUMBIA A memorial service celebrating the life of Dean Willie Lloyd Harriford, Jr. will be held Monday at 3:00 p.m. in the Russell House Theatre, 1400 Greene Street on the Campus of the University of South Carolina. Parking will be available in the Bull Street Garage. The Omega Service of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be held this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Leevy's Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, he later moved and graduated from the public schools of Sioux City, Iowa. After high school he graduated from the University of Kansas where he was on a full track scholarship. After graduating, he served his country honorably in the United States Army and became the first African American Archivist of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri. In 1968, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and helped establish the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and Center for Social Change. He would later move to Columbia, where he finished his Master's in History and became a professor. He was the founder of the African American Studies Program and organizer of the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at the University of South Carolina. He rose to the ranks of Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences before his retirement. Surviving are her his wife, Fosteen "Tina" Ward Harriford; three children, W. L. "Chip" (Robin) Harriford, Wendy Lynn Platt, and Ward Langston (Lavita) Harriford; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Diane Harriford; other loving relatives and friends.
