Edward Hopkins III Obituary

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Darrell Hopkins will be held 3 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2011, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with private burial in Hopkins Family Cemetery in Hopkins. Family will receive friends following the service in Satarlee Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or the John Adger Manning Library, Hammond School, 854 Galway Lane, Columbia, SC 29209. Mr. Manning and his wife, Margaret, were Darrell's grandparents and played a very significant, loving and caring role in Darrell's life and development.
Darrell died January 25, 2011. Born July 24, 1963, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Darrell Hopkins Jr. He is survived by his sisters, Anne H. Kissam (Keller), Elizabeth H. Walker (Andy) and Leila H. Boyd (Reese), and seven nieces and nephews who loved him and knew him as “Uncle D. He was a special person with many friends. Even with his many handicaps, he lived each day as a unique role model for those with limitations by contributing considerably to his community through his work ethic, compassion and love. Darrell always volunteered his services to those he said were “less fortunate.

For years, Darrell worked at the V.A. Hospital and Manor Care pushing wheelchair patients for x-rays, physical therapy and other needs. He worked for Meals on Wheels for 15 years. In 1996, the United Way of the Midlands awarded Darrell the first Susan Aude Fisher Volunteer with Special Disabilities Award. He also worked for Columbia Eye Clinic for 20 years and Wal-Mart Associates since 1998. The family would like to thank both the Columbia Eye Clinic and Wal-Mart for those employment opportunities. They gave Darrell a purpose in life and brought him great happiness.

The family would also like to thank Darrell's many good doctors over the years for their excellent care and Winyah Hospice for their compassionate assistance.

Dr Bud,
My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to you and your family on the loss of Darrell. He was ALWAYS an inspiration to me when I would see him at the Eye Clinic, at church or working. "He hath shown thee oh man what is good: and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. And that we love one another as He has loved us." No more befitting passages of scripture to describe your son and your whole family. God bless you all and may He continue to hold you all in the palm of His hand. Sincerely, Huel Adams Charleston SC
