Edward Stahl Obituary

CAMDEN — Funeral Mass service for Dr. Edward Leonard Stahl, Jr., 65, of Camden will be held Sunday, June 21, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Rev. Francis Travis will officiate. Serving as deacon will be Dr. Stahl’s brother-in-law, Vitas Paskauskas. The family will receive friends in St. Mary’s Hall following the service. Memorials may be made to Kershaw Health Hospital Foundation, 1315 Roberts Street, Camden, SC 29020, Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020 or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1709 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.
 
Dr. Stahl died Thursday, June 18, 2009. Born in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Edward Leonard and Sylvia Varnagis Stahl. He attended the University of IIlinois and Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago. After medical school, he entered the Army as a captain and served his internship and residency at military hospitals. He then served as chief urologist at Fort Jackson from 1973 to 1976. He left the Army in 1976 as a lt. colonel and began his private practice in Camden as a urologist. He was on staff at Kershaw Health Hospital for 29 years and served as chief of surgery for 7 years. After retiring in 2005, he worked for the State of SC Disabilities & Determination Board. Dr. Stahl was currently serving as a physician at Lee Correctional Institution. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was an avid hiker, opera lover, and devoted husband and father who enjoyed living life surrounded by his family, horses, dogs and cats.
 
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Kathleen Turkis Stahl; his loving daughters, Alyssa Stahl of Chicago, IL, Amanda Stahl McKay and her husband Chris of Athens, GA; sister, Cynthia Paskauskas (Vitas) of Chicago, IL; uncle, Philip Varnagis (Kathleen) of Chicago, cousins, Philip (Sue), Frank (Lori), John (Janet) Varnagis and Jean (Bob) Bak and their families of Chicago; brother-in-law, Dr. Martin Turkis (Deborah) of Eureka, CA, nephew and nieces, Martin Turkis, II (Grace), Rachel Turkis Traweek (Steven) and Emily Turkis; great-nieces, Kathleen and Carolanne Traweek.
