George Fann Obituary

Dr. George Hersel Fann, Jr. COLUMBIA - Dr. George Hersel Fann, Jr. was called home to be with our Lord on August 7, 2018 after putting up a valiant fight against cancer. Visitation will be Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 13 at 10:30 am at Riverland Hills Baptist Church with interment following at Woodridge Memorial Park. Born July 8, 1944 in Kingstree, SC, George was the son of the late George Hersel Fann, Sr. and Lorena Odom Fann. George is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Gaye Hynds Fann of Columbia; his four children Greg Fann (Angie) of Temecula, CA, Jeff Fann (Dorie) of Greenville, Justin Fann of Lexington, and Marissa Hill (Jason) of Lexington; grandchildren Jeffrey, Chandler, Walker, Ryder and Dempsey Fann of Greenville, Brinkley, Arleigh and Liam Hill of Lexington, and Daxton Hakim of Lexington. He is also survived by his sisters Franki (Pat) Roberts of Alexandria, VA and Maree (Billy) Webster of Greenville as well as five nieces and nephews and their spouses. George is also survived by his sister in-law, Lisa Saye (Tom) of Chapin, and brother in-law Larry Hynds of Gaston. George attended Clemson University and was an avid Tiger fan. He graduated from the University of Louisville with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine. He served as a dentist in the US Navy for two years before he and Gaye moved to Columbia where George diligently served in his practice for 46 years. He truly loved and cared for all his patients, whom he also considered friends. George was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where he served as an Usher and a Deacon. Throughout his life, George served in many capacities including Chairman of the Board at Lexington Medical Center, Founding Member of First Community Bank, a member of The Academy of General Dentistry, and the South Carolina Dental Association. He received many accolades including the Order of the Palmetto, and was recently honored as a Member Emeritus from the First Community Bank Board of Directors. Though he will be dearly missed, George's life lessons such as "Remember to Represent the Family Well," always work hard and share the fruits of your labor with others, travel and see the world, and smile and speak to everyone you encounter will always be remembered and treasured by his family. In his memory, George asked that donations be made to Resurrection Church, a church in Oakland, CA recently planted by his nephew, Rev. Brent Webster. Donations may be mailed to Resurrection Oakland, 4123 Broadway #816, Oakland, CA 94611. You can read more about Resurrection Oakland at resoakland.com. What a true friend we just lost. George's skill in building relationships with his patients equaled his dentistry skills. Always encouraging and solid in his advice. Our prayers are with Gaye and the family.

George was a true Christian gentleman. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. His wisdom is exemplified by his prophetic advise to "only floss the teeth you want to keep!" Seriously, George was intelligent and leader in the community while remaining humble to the end. We'll surely miss George, but Heaven has a new gardener and his tee time is set for tomorrow.

Truly saddens my heart to read this about George this morning. A great, wonderful, friendly man. Glad to have known him since the early 80's. I'm glad he and Gaye got to do some traveling after his retirement. God's blessing to each and all of the family.

Georges energy and cheerfulness were contagious. He always made me smile. In fact, he gave me the smile Im wearing!
A skillful and excellent dentist, George was compassionate and deeply concerned about his patients. We knew it. He also loved and served his Church family. His love for Gaye and the kids was obvious. I will miss my friend and dentist. Gaye, you & the family have been and will be in my prayers.
