George Ross Obituary

George Gordon Ross
December 10, 1933 - February 2, 2023
West Columbia, South Carolina - George Gordon Ross died Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Still Hopes Retirement Community. He was born December 10, 1933 in Berkeley, California. He was the son of the late Charles and Sara Tabener Ross. George was educated at Berkeley High School and graduated from San Francisco State University. He began his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation following graduation and continued to work with the Bureau through his retirement in 1984. He served as a special agent throughout his career and had many assignments throughout the country. His last assignments were in Quantico, Virginia and in Columbia, South Carolina. He enjoyed his time with his Columbia agents, and he continued his relationships after retirement with weekly breakfast.
While in the FBI, George was loaned to serve with the United States Air Force for a period of three years. He served with the 75th Fighter Squadron and retired as a Captain in the service. After retirement from the FBI, he went to work with C&S Bank (Bank of America) as a security investigator. He was a member of the FBI Association, Air Force Association, First Baptist Church, and Joy Sunday School Class.
George enjoyed fly fishing with his son, Greg, and his friends on trips out West. These were special memories to him. He also loved to play tennis, racquetball, and to exercise at the YMCA, usually being the first to arrive in the morning!
George is survived by his loving wife Mary Ruff Ross; his sons Dr. Greg (Patty) Ross of Florida and David (Changsook) Ross of South Korea; his stepchildren Dr. John (Ann) Beasley and Joye Beasley (Stan) Harpe, both of Columbia; his sister-in-law Sally (Jim) Wiseman of Columbia; ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, William Ross and Charles Ross, his sister, Betsy Ross Meyer, his brother-in-law, Delleney Ruff, and his sister-in-law Melinda Ruff.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Still Hopes. The family will receive friends at the Still Hopes Mansion immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank the loving staff at Still Hopes, especially the Saluda Unit, the Prisma Hospice, and Solution Caregiver Lolita Roberts for their considerate care.
George was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. He leaves great memories to all whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Still Hopes Retirement Community, located at 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 and First Baptist Church, located at 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

I first met George when he came to Columbia with the FBI. He was the kindest most considerate person. We spent many hours at the YMCA and George was always the perfect gentleman. May God bless the family in this sad time.

George and I met when he was working Domestic Intelligence with the FBI. We continued to be friends at the Sol Blatt PE Center and the Mouse Trap after his retirement.
I always had the utmost respect for George. What a super guy.
You will be missed greatly .
