Guy White Obituary

Guy Haywood White III
February 11, 1935 - October 26, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - Guy Haywood White III, received his heavenly reward Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022 as he was embraced by his family. He would say his demise was brought about by too many birthdays. His clinicians would call it "complications from multiple myeloma." He was 87.
The only child of Guy H. White Jr. and Elizabeth Carson White, he was predeceased by his parents and his high school sweetheart, Kay Marshall White. Guy was born Feb. 11, 1935 in Asheville, N.C.
He earned a BS in electrical engineering from The Citadel and a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University. He was also an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army and the S.C. Army National Guard. He and his grandfather, Guy H. White, were both listed in the roster of South Carolina Professional Engineers in 1961. In 2015, he was inducted into The Citadel Academy of Engineers. Guy's many other personal and professional recognitions and achievements – such as holding a patent on a power distribution transformer switch still in use today, to being named to the honor roll of the National Piano-Playing Auditions when he was 7 – are too numerous to be documented here.
Guy, and his wife, Kay, built a life together for more than 65 years of marriage. He is survived by three children, David Marshall White (Carolyn); Marshall Allyn White, M.D.; and Kim White O'Quinn. As "Poppa," he doted on eight grandchildren – Marshall, Alston, Jason (Elizabeth), Kevin (Elena), Haywood, Courtenay, Alyvia and Kaetlyn – and five great grandchildren – JP, Bennett, Isabel, Eloise and Katy Mae. He also was predeceased by his son-in-law, Jon H. Ryall Jr.
He was a founding partner in Tectonics Engineering Consultants, Inc., and Guy White & Associates, Inc., providing electrical engineering consultation and design to clients worldwide. He retired in 2010.
A member of Shandon Presbyterian Church since 1961, he served over the years as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher, youth advisor, usher, member of visitation team for prospective members, member Long-Range Planning Committee, Building Committee for the 1995 Activity Center and 2017 Sanctuary Preservation project. He also served on the Ministry of Outreach, Chair of Music Committee, Chair of Capital Funds Campaign for the McDonald Youth Center, Chair of Ministry of Administration, Chair of Property Committee, and Co-chair of the Search Committee for Agnes Norfleet. Most recently he served as church treasurer from 2000 - 2018.
He was a passionate and accomplished amateur photographer, creating moody and emotive photos as well as hundreds of shots documenting his family's early lives and loves.
A celebration of the life of Guy will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 at Shandon Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jenny McDevitt will guide the service. The family will welcome friends from 3:00-6:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the home of David and Carolyn White. Parking is limited; please carpool if possible.
Among many others, the family specifically appreciates the love and care of Guy's career-long majordomo, Drucilla Brookshire, whose untold years of friendship can never be appreciated and welcomed enough.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes any memorials be made in his name to Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, S.C., 29205, and The Citadel Foundation, Jayne Martinko, 171 Moultrie Ave. Charleston, S.C., 29409.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.

Guy was the best in the business of being an Electrical Engineer. And a good friend indeed.
Spent many years working together on several projects and he even taught me electrical engineering. He will be missed......

I have many precious memories of Guy. He was wonderful to work with ... He, Wayne Mabry & Zach McGhee we´re such a team and led many of younger engineers to be good stewards of their leadership and professionalism. I look back fondly on the many stories, events etc that we experienced at Tectonics. May God bless and comfort his family ... Harry
