Gwendolyn "Gwen" Thorne Brown

Columbia, South Carolina - Gwendolyn "Gwen" Thorne Brown, 73, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Born in Columbia, SC, Gwen was the daughter of the late Charlton Allen Brown, DDS and Celia "Ouida" Jones Brown. She was predeceased by Louise McKenzie Jones (maternal grandmother); Celia "Cely" Brown Davis (sister); numerous aunts and uncles; her closest friends, Marion Tompkins, Lisbeth Wolf Lawall, Ronnie Huggins; and numerous pets.
Surviving are Ben Davis (nephew and his son, Colt), Lindsay Davis McDonough (niece, husband Liam, sons, Connor and Logan); Charlie and Patricia Davis (brother and sister-in-law); and numerous cousins of Jones to Brunson and Busbee descent; her cat (TeeDee); and several close, wonderful friends in the Columbia area, Spartanburg and Bluffton.
She was a product of Richland One schools (AC Moore, Hand, Dreher), graduating from Dreher High School in 1970. She enjoyed attending Class of '70 high school reunions, renewing old friendships and developing new friendships with those she did not know at Dreher.
She graduated USC with a degree in Spanish and a M.S. of Speech Language Pathology in 1979. It was through conversations with an acquaintance that let her to the field of Speech-Language Pathology, which became her raison d' être. It was a field that held her fascination for more than 30 years and was a large part of her identity.
Employment included Spartanburg County Schools (Districts 7 and 6), Professional Rehabilitation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, Richland County Schools (Districts 1 and 2), and EC Singleton Right Care. She was a volunteer for Rape Crisis in Spartanburg, and a tutor with the local chapter of the adult reading program Turning Pages.
Heartfelt gratitude is offered to PRISMA Hospice, especially for nurse Kendall. Sincere appreciation is extended to doctors Martha Parker Hester and her practice, Keith Brightbill, Joshua Fowler, Phillip Steude. Charles Butler, Ashley and the entire care team of SCOA.

The family will greet friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
