Henry Hiers Obituary

HAMPTON — Mr. Henry Gregory “Greg” Hiers of Savannah Highway near Hampton, SC, died Monday, September 14, 2009, at his residence after a brief illness.
 
Born March 5, 1925, in Olar, SC, he was the son of the late Laurie Franklin Hiers and Florrie Dyches Hiers. Mr. Hiers served his country during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict in the United States Army, retiring after 26 years of service and receiving many medals such as: Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), Bronze Star Medal w/OLC, Purple Heart w/OLC, American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Campaign Medal (Japan), WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/OLC; 4 O/S Bars, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He was Past Grand Commander of S.C. York Rite Bodies, member of Evergreen Masonic Lodge Number 153 in Hampton, SC, Omar Shrine Club and Worthy Patron of Lillie Chapter #27 Order of the Eastern Star and numerous other appendix to Masonic Orders.
 
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lavoda Cowart Hiers of the home; one daughter, Durena Hiers Marcum of Hampton; one grandson, Greg R. Marcum and wife Gail of Walterboro; one granddaughter, Leigh Hiester of Coosawhatchie, SC; one great-grandson, Trey Mixson; one stepgreat-grandson, Codie Harley; one brother, James W. Hiers of Goose Creek, SC; two sisters, Evelyn Hair of Daniel Island, SC, and Brenda Widener of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Mell Hiers of Allendale; special nephew, Larry R. Hiers of Brule, NE, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Henry G. Hiers Jr.; his brothers: Will R. Hiers and Laurie Franklin Hiers, and his sister, Marilyn H. Priester.
 
Funeral services, with military honors and Masonic rites, will be held Thursday, September 17 at 11 a.m. in Varnville Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Kelly. Burial will follow in Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill, SC.
 
Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry Street West, Hampton, SC 29924 (803-943-3352).

Lavodia, please accept our condolenances. It was a shock not only to you but us as well. I am glad I was able to be with him a short time on Saturday at the Heroes Enchampment. It meant so much to him. God bless you and your family during this time. Our prayers a with you.
