Howard "Butch" Ligon Jones, Jr.

Columbia, South Carolina - Howard "Butch" Ligon Jones, Jr., 74, passed away peacefully at home on March 26, 2024. Born in Aiken, SC February 16, 1950 he was the son of the late Dorothy Sims Jones and Howard Ligon Jones.
Butch is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Susan Lundquist Jones, brother ,Alfred Burdette Jones (Cynthia), nephew, Brad Jones (Lesley), niece, Whitney Jones Thigpen (Tyler), brother-in-law, Tom Lundquist, niece, Heather L. Walter (Nathan), Bradley Lundquist, great-nieces Camryn and Allie Thigpen and great-nephew, Easton Jones.
Butch moved to Bamberg, SC in the first grade and graduated from Bamberg High School in 1968 as Salutatorian. He was an All American in baseball, basketball and football. Butch received many accolades in high school including President of the Student Body and Mr. Merry Christmas. Butch was awarded a football scholarship and attended the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. After earning his MBA in 1974 from the University of South Carolina, Butch joined South Carolina Federal Savings Bank and served as Branch Manager and later as a Senior Loan Officer. He continued his banking career at Standard Federal before transitioning into commercial real estate business at The Keenan Company, now Colliers International, where he worked from 1984 through 1990. Butch worked for several years at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company before joining Baptist Hospital as the Executive Director of the Foundation. He was instrumental in coordinating the Breast Cancer Walk For Life until the Baptist and Richland Hospitals merged becoming Palmetto Health. He then became the Director of Real Estate and Business Development and was the Director of the United Way Campaign for (10) years. Butch retired from Palmetto Health in 2016.
Butch loved the Gamecocks and attended many basketball and football games over the years and was a member of the Letterman's Association. He was also an avid golfer, a triathlete, a Little League Coach and a member of Wildewood Club, the Palmetto Club, and Forest Lake Club. He was known as a great storyteller with a quick wit and sense of humor. Butch loved to read and spent many hours discussing his favorite books and enjoyed lending and borrowing them. He and Susan enjoyed traveling and were blessed to visit many countries including France, Italy, England, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Greece, Czech Republic and many lovely resorts in the Caribbean and the United States.
Butch was a man of deep faith and was an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church for many years. He served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, mentor in the Carver Lyon Elementary School program and a leader in The Waverly Community Program. One of his greatest joys was being in the Thursday Morning Men's Bible Study which he attended weekly for many years.
Butch served on the Board of Directors for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the SC Football Hall of Fame.
A Service in Witness to the Resurrection for Butch Jones will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, with Visitation at 1:45 PM in Thompson Hall prior to the service. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Reception at Forest Lake Club.
Honorary pallbearers are the Thursday Morning Men's Bible Study group and Greg Black, David Burr, John Folsom, Bobby Foster, Marvin Huggins, Steve Johnson, Neel Keenan, David Free, Jack Padgett, Tony Parker, Chet Penninger, John Singerling, Scott Shockley, and Arnold Schraibman.
The family would like to thank the healthcare workers and staff from Caring Healthcare, Caris Healthcare and DayBreak for the loving, dignified and compassionate care they provided for Butch.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eastminster Presbyterian Church In Action Fund or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
