Inez Hicks Obituary

COLUMBIA — Inez Derrick Hicks, 90, passed away at her home Thursday afternoon, December 17, 2009, after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Henry Barney Derrick and Florence Gregory Derrick. Born December 9, 1919, in Lexington, S.C., she was married to her beloved husband, the late Lewis English Hicks, for almost 69 years.

Mrs. Hicks attended the University of South Carolina and Columbia Commercial College. She had been a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Incarnation since 1940. She was a charter member of the Couples Sunday School Class and a member of the Women of the Church, the Altar Guild, the Ladies Sewing Group, the Happy Wanderers, a provider of meals for the bereaved and was a Girl Scout leader.

She played in several bridge clubs and enjoyed her garden club. She loved entertaining her friends and family. She and her husband hosted every family reunion at their home through the years.

Her absolute delight was taking care of her grandchildren. She and her husband took care of all five of them from the time they were born until they went to three-year-old kindergarten. She was so happy to be able to know her two great-granddaughters, Ainsley Owen Adams, born in September, and Charlotte Forbes Staub, born in October.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan H. Edwards, of Columbia, and her children, Owen M. Edwards and English E. Adams (Christian) and baby Ainsley; son, Charles D. Hicks (Kelly), of Columbia, and their children, Myra H. Staub (Van) and baby Charlotte, Kathleen D. and Maggie M. Hicks; her sister-in-law, Dorothy H. Dennis; brother-in-law, Murray C. Hicks, both of Columbia; and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hicks was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph D. and Ocie G. Derrick.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009, at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 3005 Devine St., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Mary Anderson and the Rev. Dr. David Donges. There will be a private burial service for family members in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. prior to the service in the church parlor (Sims Ave. entrance). Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

The family would like to thank the devoted caregivers who have taken such loving care of Mrs. Hicks at her home for quite some time: Marcia, Ashlee, Willie Mae and her very special “Perky.” Also, the family wishes to thank the loving Lutheran Hospice caregivers for their special care, especially Marshall, Malerey and Felicia.

Memorials may be made to Incarnation Lutheran Church or Epworth Children’s Home.
