James Barfield Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Elwyn Barfield, Jr. (Jim), who left our earthly confines on May 8, 2025 at the age of 89. Jim was a devoted service member of the community, a cherished friend, and a beloved family member. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on April 14, 1936, Jim was born in Charleston, SC and spent his formative years in both Charleston, SC and Lynchburg, SC, spending some of his formative years with Gussie and Jimmie

Dougherty, Jr. on their tobacco farm. The values instilled in Jim during these early years shaped him into the compassionate and generous person he became.

After graduation from Lynchburg High School, Jim pursued his education in Economics, attending the University of South Carolina, where he made lifelong friendships including his Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers, and Delta Sigma Pi Betta Gamma Chapter colleagues. After graduation Jim served in the U.S. Air Force, Jim pursued a law degree on the GI Bill, attending the University of South Carolina's School of Law. After graduation, Jim embarked on a successful career in Law and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve where he was known for his dedication, professionalism, and devoted service until retirement with 35 years of service as a Lt. Colonel. Jim received The United States of America, Meritorious Service Medal on July 11, 1989.

Jim was a beloved family member, always providing as a true southern gentleman does. He shared a wonderful life with his wife of 60 years, Linda Moore Barfield, his children Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Binh, and grandson Dylan, creating countless cherished memories. Jim is survived by those family members, a sister-in-law Carol Moore, and cousins Frances Dengate, Patty Procopio, Jimmy Dengate, as well as nieces and nephews. Jim's love for his fellow man was evident in every aspect of his life, from the small, everyday moments to the countless people he has assisted with a true servant's heart.

Jim was deeply involved in the community, contributing his time and talents to numerous causes and organizations. Jim's commitment to making the world a better place was reflected in his charter and 50+ year membership in the Lexington Rotary Club, a 50+ year membership in the SC Bar Association, and as a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia, and a founding member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church where he served in all capacities. Jim was also a member of the Columbia Oyster Club.

The legacy of Jim is one of kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for others. They touched the lives of many, leaving behind a lasting impression that will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew them. Their spirit will live on through the stories shared, the lessons learned, and the love that endures.

A visitation to honor Jim's life will be held on Sunday, May 11, 2025 from 3pm to 5pm at Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington. Friends, family, and all who knew Jim are invited to come together to celebrate their life, share memories, and offer support to one another during this difficult time. Also, a Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, time to be updated on Barr-Price, Lexington website, all are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Jim's name to alivingtibute.org, a cause close to Jim's heart. Contributions may also be made to the Lexington Rotary Club, Scholarship Program, a legacy that will continue his work and help to carry forward the values he held dear.

Though Jim is no longer with us, his spirit remains. We find comfort in the memories, the love, and the laughter shared. As we mourn the loss, we also celebrate the incredible life that Jim lived. He may be gone, but he will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Jim. You will be forever remembered and cherished.

I want everyone to know what a dear man Jim was. I worked next door to him for 20 years and he always had a hello, how are you, do you need anything. We have missed him since his retirement. And will truly miss him now. He was a fine and caring person.

We remember when Jim came to Lexington to practice law with Senator Banny Jones; later with Jones, Long, Barfield, and Bauknight. As time went by, they sent their children to the Little Red Schoolhouse. Jim was a model lawyer and consummate citizen leader.

Oh what a special man Jim was! My special memories come from showing Tennessee Walking Horses with Jim and his family. We became very close friends as we rode at the barn at Rae Martin Stables and traveled to horse shows across SC, NC, Ga, and Tennessee. Linda and her children were so close to me and my children. Memories of Wade and John having King of the Hill encounters, sleepovers after horse shows, and just the wonderful friendship Linda and I shared. Time has slipped by, and I have not talked with she or Jim in a few years. My heart goes out to Linda, Elizabeth, Margaret, and John. Praying for the comfort and strength that only comes from our Lord and Savior.

Mr. B was a special person to my family. So many good, precious memories. I treasure our last phone conversation where I enjoyed that unique laugh. May he rest in peace. My heart breaks for Linda and the children.

Jim and Linda were great friends. For years, my wife and I rode to the Carolina football games in Jim's RV, and he always managed to find a parking place in the farmers' market across from Williams-Brice Stadium. Jim was kind, generous, and loved to laugh. I mourn his passing. He was a good man.
