James Mathis Obituary
June 4, 1947 - October 20, 2021
Irmo, South Carolina - James E. " Butch" Mathis of Irmo, husband of 54 years to Johnnie Mathis, passed away on October 20, 2021.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday October 24, 2021 at Chapin United Methodist Church with Reverend Jody Flowers officiating.
Born on June 4, 1947, Butch was the son of Brantley and Mattie Mathis. He was a proud member of the Bishopville High class of 1965, and still enjoyed regular lunch meetings with "The Bishopville Boys" who will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Butch earned his undergraduate degree in Business in 1969 from the University of South Carolina where he also earned his MBA.
He began his career with Sonoco Products Company and later started his own manufacturing company. His motto was "Do what it takes to get the job done". This meant long, hard work hours, but he still made time for his favorite past times – flying, fishing and racing. He was an accomplished commercial pilot who enjoyed his time as a flight instructor and multi-engine pilot with a sea plane rating. Fishing, especially on Lake Murray, Santee, and Lake Fontana, NC with his longtime friend Allen Gilbert was another favorite hobby. Butch competed in the Sportsmans Division of NASCAR and on local dirt tracks.
He was also an avid supporter of Gamecock sports, was a US Army veteran and a member of Chapin United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his two children Jim Mathis (Elaine) and Susan Noller (Drew). He loved being surrounded by his seven grandchildren: Ethan, Ashley, John and Ava Noller and Hannah, Caleb and Daniel Mathis. Also surviving are his nephew, David Sellers, as well as numerous aunts and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Sellers, brother-in-law, George Sellers and nephew, Michael Sellers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chapin UMC, The American Cancer Society or to the charity of one's choice.

As former neighbors, Anne and I offer our belated sympathy to the family. We enjoyed our brief time together. I remember riding Butch's jet ski for my first experience ever and he got a kick out of my naive moves and turns. He loved the outdoors and fishing Lake Murray. We have fond memories.
