Jan Warner Obituary

COLUMBIA — Jan L. Warner, age 67, beloved husband of Vicki Shuford Warner, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at his residence.

He was born May 9, 1942, in Dunkirk, NY, but raised in Sumter, SC. He left this earth October 27, 2009. Jan was renowned for his innovative legal skills; however, his family remembers him as a caring, giving man with great wisdom. Jan’s family was always his priority, and he showed it with his unwavering love and commitment to them.

Jan graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter in 1960. He was nominated to attend the United States Air Force Academy, where he played football. Jan then received his A.B. and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina and earned his Master’s of Legal Letters (L.L.M.) from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a Certified Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, and the American Judicature Society, among other legal organizations. In addition, he was an adjunct professor in U.S.C.’s Department of Neuropsychology.

Jan was the co-author of two nationally-syndicated columns, Flying Solo and NextSteps, via the United Media Syndicate. His works were published in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, N.Y. Post, L.A. Times, etc. He was also the co-author of the recently published book “Next Steps: A Practical Guide to Planning for the Best Half of Your Life.”

Jan was predeceased by his father, Warner T. Warner, and survived by his beloved wife, Vicki Shuford Warner; by his mother, Naomi Warner; by five children, Paul Manville (Mary Catherine), Monty Warner, Mark Manville, Brandon Warner and Carrie Warner; a brother, Edwin (Marilyn) and a sister, Bonnie (Sid); two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Annabelle; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

The Warner family wishes to personally thank Leland McElveen, M.D., Kim DeWitt, Nanci Koon and the S.C.O.A. staff, as well as Kim Eaker and the staff at Palmetto Baptist Hospice. The family asks that all well-wishers remember Jan as a strong, kind, generous human being with unyielding love for his family, his work and his country.

A memorial service celebrating Jan’s life will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, 1408 Old Wallow Gregg Road, Florence, SC 29506 or to Temple Sinai Cemetery Fund, 13 Church Street, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Dear Warner family,
It's 2022 and dear Jan has been gone a long time. But a person whose name conts in the hearts and on the lips of others is never completely gone.
My best friend's husband has developed dementia. She needs a lawyer. And I, remembering how very kind he and Vickie were to my grandmother, whispered, "Jan Warner."
Gone way too soon. My warm and tender regards to his remaining family. He is not forgotten.

When I needed a divorce lawyer, I happened to see Jan's picture next to his elder care column. He looked like someone who could help me find a good lawyer. Little did I know that he would jump right in and take over my case himself. And he was awesome. An unbelievably smart, funny, aggressive yet kind, tireless advocate. I couldn't have asked for a better lawyer or better person to help me in my time of need. The world has lost a great man.

Vicki, Carrie and Family
I was shocked to hear about Jan. I didn't meet him until 2006; however, he helped me through a most difficult time. He always made me laugh and I felt he had my interest as his utmost priority. He will be truely missed. I send my condolences to the family.

I always enjoyed working with Jan, and also enjoyed getting to know his family.
I missed the memorial service because I was out of the country but I will always remember Jan as a friend and inspiration.

I will never forget how kind and genuine Mr. Warner was. His dedication to the law inspires me and his compassion for his family showed the great man that he truly was. The time that my mother spent as one of Mr. Warner's associates at Warner, Payne, & Black I believe shaped her into the wonderful lawyer that she is today. He was a wonderful mentor to those around him and a one of a kind advocate for the disabled and elderly.

Mr. Warner will be truly missed. My mother and I have the family in our prayers and know that Mr. Warner's legacy will remain for years to come.

To Vicki and all the Warner Family,

We just arrived home from Jan's moving Memorial Service and we also bear testimony to his greatness and we shall miss him so. Our deepest sympathies and May God Bless You All.

October 29, 2009

Vicki, please accept my condolences to you and the family.

Jan was generous (let us use the beach house for our honeymoon), had an enormous zest for life, tolerated a good Christmas party to the very end with you and him staying past to see if all was taken care of, a brilliant mind for helping other people less fortunate that him, but a great and good person. That speaks volumes of his wonderful life.

You only had to meet Jan once, for an impact to be made. He was such an advocate for the disabled and elderly-- he will be truly missed.

I count myself lucky for having known him-- he always made me laugh-- always. And he also was the most compassionate person- I'll never forget how he made my Aunt feel at ease, making sure her wishes were met, as she was going through her treatments. He was a special person.

My deepest sympathies to his family--My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I have been a cliet of Jan's for two years now. He was such a remarkable man, and he sincerely cared for my daughter and me, and for the trials that life has brought our way. I will miss him so very much that words cannot begin to express. He had a twinkle in his eye, everytime we met, and I always felt confident that he had my best interest at hand and that he would move heaven and earth to seek justice for me. To his firm & family: my prayers are with you as you have the daily task of forging on without him by your side. I'm sure you feel as I do: very, very blessed to have known such an awesome man!!

Vicki, Carrie, Paul, and the rest of the Warner Family...my love, prayers and condolences go out to you all. I am sick with grief. I can't begin to say what Jan has meant to me over the years, not to mention all that he has done for me and my family. He was more to me than an "employer", he was my "friend". I will miss him terribly! My heart already aches at the thought of him not being in the office when I return. I hate that I am away and cannot pay my due respects. However, I am glad that I did decide to go home on R & R and have the opportunity to see him. He will be surely missed!

October 29, 2009

We have truely lost a wonderful man. The impact that he had on my mother and myself will never be forgotten. He was such a great blessing to my family and to me. He is responsible for giving me my first "professional" job. He will always hold a special place in my heart. My condolences go out to Vicki and the rest of his family. He will truely be missed by many. Alicia Martinez, daughter of Yvonne Madison, former employee, Columbia

I was a client of Jan's in 1998. He was so passionate to advise me with the very best options for my elderly mother. He greeted and talked with her with such tenderness. I am so thankful I had this opportunity to meet such a dedicated and caring person.

My prayers are with the family.

Jan was one of the smartest, kindest and funniest men I ever knew. He was so popular and loved by all his friends in high school and although I didn't get to see him much until later on in life, I know he carried that persona all through his life. When I saw him again in the 90"s, what struck me most was his great love for you, Vicki and how proud he was of all of his children. He was a wonderful friend to me and my family. Always so encouraging. I will miss him very much. My prayers are with all of you..

Vicki and family, my sincerest condolences to you all. Jan will certainly be missed by so many. I was very fortunate to have worked for him many years ago and will always appreciate his smile, his sense of humor and the fact that he always asked about my mom whenever he would see me. He will certainly be missed for his brilliant mind, his sense of humor, his kindness, but most of all his love for his family.

Vicki & Carrie and Warner Family,
My heart goes out to you all and wish I could be with you tomorrow. As you know Jan was special in so many ways and he will be missed by many. For me, 25 years of coaching I can honestly say he was one of my true favorites! Jan was one funny guy, but had the keen ability to pick others up when they were down and needed support. Although the years have passed since we spent time together and Carrie your time here at UA was much to short, I was always treated like family and will never forget the last time Jan was here and we both got emotional because you were leaving UA. LIke I said, he was one very special man!
Love you all!

What a great man to leave this earth at such a young age. Jan Warner was a tough, funny, kind and gracious man. He kept me standing when I thought at times I wouldn't be able to make it.

I was so sorry to hear of Jan's death this morning when my sister called from Sumter, SC. I was a class mate of Jan's and I remember that at our 40th reunion, We made the flight but our luggage did not. You and Jan were so thoughtful and picked it up for us in Columbia and brought it to us before the festivities began on Sat. morning. It was so good to see him at that time and to meet his wife and it was a very thoughtful thing to do. He will be missed. Nancy Cooper Nohrenberg

Such a giant for the underrepresented through the law. Jan so gracious to listen to my daughter and her personal challenges. He was the first attorney, after contacting many, who listened, encouraged her, gave her hope, and met the challenge. We have only know him for a little while, but he will be greatly missed.

To the family and his fellow law partners, our love, sympathies, and prayers that our Lord will give you peace.

I'll never forget the time I was doing body work on Jan and he left is cell phone on. The song that played sounded like a spiritual, the man singing had a rich baritone voice. It was melodic and beautiful. Then I realized that the words he was singing were anything but. I started laughing so hard, which made him start laughing. Soon both of us couldn't breathe. We had a bunch of sessions that were peppered with fits of laughter. I will never forget those, I will never forget you Jan.
