Jo Nichols Obituary

Jo Anne Nichols

June 2, 1936 - February 2, 2025

Hendersonville, North Carolina - Jo Anne Nichols, a native of Great Falls, South Carolina, and a longtime resident of Columbia, South Carolina, died peacefully in the early morning hours of February 2, 2025. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Carolina Village, a retirement community in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Ms. Nichols was the daughter of the late James Heath Nichols and Leila Lewis Nichols. In addition to her parents, Ms. Nichols was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Heath Nichols of Atlanta and her sister, Patricia Nichols Dalbec of Hendersonville. She is survived by her sister Martha Nichols Lowry of Hendersonville, her sister-in-law, Barbara Dasher Nichols of Atlanta, and brothers-in-law, Keith Dalbec and James Lowry both of Hendersonville. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews for whom she was a much beloved aunt famous for her love of cats, books, and summer vacations at the beach.

Ms. Nichols was a 1954 graduate of Great Falls High School and a 1958 graduate of Columbia College. Immediately upon graduation from college, she began teaching Social Studies at Crayton Middle School in Columbia where she continued her career until she reached retirement age. By all accounts, Ms. Nichols was extremely popular among her students and was held in the highest regard by her colleagues on the faculty and staff of Crayton Middle School.

Ms. Nichols was a lifelong member of Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church in Great Falls. As an expression of her faith commitment, for many years she served as the primary caregiver for her mother. Members of her family are deeply grateful for that service.

Ms. Nichols' family is particularly grateful to Bea Whitener, her thoughtful and wise companion and caregiver, and to the staff of the Carolina Village Care Center for the professional and personal attention they gave to her during her final illness.

Shuler Funeral Home of Hendersonville and Dantzler Baker Funeral Home of Great Falls are aiding Ms. Nichols' family in making arrangements for a graveside funeral to be held at 1:00 P M, Saturday, March 1, 2025, in the Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, 14246 S.
