Born in Barnwell County (Snelling), Joe was the husband of Bernice Williams Wright of Barnwell who preceded him in death in 1994.
He was the second of eight siblings born to the late Joe Wright Sr. and Hattie Jamison Wright of Barnwell.
Joe was of the Christian faith and a member of Springfield Baptist Church and St. Paul Baptist Church, both in Barnwell, where he served as deacon for most of his adult life. He worked fifteen (15) years for former South Carolina Speaker of the House of Representatives and longtime lawyer, Solomon Blatt Sr. of Barnwell, and retired from the Barnwell County Hospital System after fifteen (15) years of service.
He never met a stranger and had unselfish love for all people, especially his family. He had many talents and was legendary for fixing anything. He was a mentor and a positive influence to many people.
Survivors include six sons: Aubrey L. Wright (Patricia), Rev. Freddie L. Wright (Gardenia), both of Barnwell, Joel Wright (Earline) of Columbia, John A. Wright (Francina) of Mullins, Donald L. Wright (Judy) of Mauldin, and Bobby J. Wright (Tonie) of Columbia; a paternal daughter, Shashonda Jones of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Isabella Sailor, Hartford, CT; two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, seventeen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28th at First Baptist Church, Barnwell. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lebby Funeral Home, Barnwell.
In lieu of flowers, donations or contributions in memory of Joe Wright Jr. should be made to Springfield Baptist Church (Barnwell), c/o Deacon Roundtree, 7 Rushton Court, North Augusta, SC 29841.
Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell is in charge of arrangements.
