He then attended one year at the University of Maine but with the United States gaining involvement in World War II he voluntarily enrolled in the United States Navy. In the Navy, he trained as a quartermaster 2nd class and served on the LSM-R 193, a rocket ship that took part in the Okinawa campaign in 1945. In peacetime, he then enrolled in and attended Hamilton College in Clinton, NY earning his AB degree in 1949. He then returned to Maine to write for The Daily Commercial in Bangor, Maine. He decided to go on to graduate school in 1950 at the University of VA where he studied American History earning a master's degree in 1953, and his PhD in 1961. During that time, he wrote for the Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, VA, and served on the staff at McGraw Hill Book Co in New York City. After teaching abroad he lived and worked in Washington, DC where his research interests led him, and finally calling Columbia, SC his home for the past 32 years. There he continued to conduct his research, write, and publish up until just couple years ago. Dr. Moore loved history and storytelling which resulted in publishing numerous books, and articles in magazines and journals throughout his lifetime. He was an extremely accomplished writer. He remained an active and dedicated member of the Media Club of Columbia, SC, an organization dedicated to raising and maintaining high professional standards among media professionals. Especially in this age he believed in the important work journalists did every day to find the truth and preserve history. He also actively remained supportive of the American Disabled Veteran's organization, his previous alma mater's libraries, various historical societies, historical restoration organizations, environmental organizations, and wildlife foundations. He was an active and dedicated member of the Trinity Cathedral. He will be fondly remembered as a good friend and mentor who encouraged individuals to pursue their goals. He had a wonderful sense of humor and kindness. His legacy is his deep love for his friends, family, history, teaching, and writing. His generous spirit will continue in the work through the many lives of those he impacted. A service is scheduled for Friday, September 15th at 11 am at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in the main cathedral with a reception to follow.
