John Schofield Obituary

Dr. John William Schofield FLORENCE - Dr. John William Schofield, 91, of Florence, SC passed away peacefully on May 20, 2012 after an illness. "Scho" as he was called by his many friends was married to Ellouise Jones Schofield for more than 55 years before her death in 2009. "Doc" as he was called by his thousands of patients over the years is predeceased by his sister Mary Schofield Murchison of Dillon, his two brothers Thomas Griffith Schofield of Smyrna, GA, and Dr. Elliott Crayton Schofield of Salisbury, NC. He is survived by his two children, John William Schofield, Jr. of Florence and Margaret Adelia Schofield of Charleston, his sister Franke Schofield Taylor of Columbia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Scho and Ellouise were proud members of Central United Methodist Church in Florence and joined the church in 1954. in 2006 he founded the Schofield Media Center in honor of his beloved wife and has worked tirelessly since its inception. Scho also was a well respected and popular Disciple Class Teacher at Central and always put countless hours of research and care into the meaningful lessons he shared with his students. Dr. Schofield was born in Fork, SC and was the son of Dr. Nathan Norris Schofield and Ethel Watson Schofield. In 1942 he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. While attending USC he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and he absolutely loved everything "Gamecock". Following three years of service in the Army during World War II, he attended and graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina (MUSC) in 1950. His internship was at Knoxville General Hospital with his residency in Internal Medicine at Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases. He later served as an instructor at the Medical School of State University of New York in Syracuse. Dr. Schofield began his medical practice in Florence in 1954 and played a major role in the construction of McLeod Regional Medical Center which also served as the primary facility for his patients over the years.. He also laid the groundwork for the establishment of the BS degree program in nursing at Francis Marion as a branch of MUSC. Ever so generous and devoted he served two terms on the MUSC Board of Trustees and is a former president of the Florence County Medical Society. Doc is regarded still today as one of the top Diagnosticians this area has ever known. After retiring as a physician in 1990 he enjoyed his service in the Kiwanis Club, tending to his bountiful vegetable and stunning rose gardens, capturing memorable photographs, and traveling to foreign lands. Despite having so many keen interests Scho was a dutiful servant to his Lord and church and a doting husband and father. Dr. Schofield never lost his unquenchable thirst to learn new things and he certainly lived each day to the fullest. His "tell it like it is" candor and his childlike enthusiasm will be missed by his many patients and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with visitation at 1:00 pm followed by interment at the Mt. Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum in Florence. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Golden K Kiwanis Club. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Schofield Media Center at Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Working as a Nurse with your Dad in the hospital and in his office in the 80's was my pleasure. He taught me so much about medicine and health care. I also loved the fact he shared all the vegtables and fruits the patients brought him. We also loved the barbques with him at the Turners. I will miss him very much.

Doc Schofield was my mom's doctor when she discovered breast cancer at the age of 36. I was just 16 and my father had died years earlier so to say we were scared is an understatement. The physician who first diagnosed my mom told me, at age 16, mind you, that if we were lucky, my mom might have 6 months to live. Dr. Schofield - well, I won't tell you exactly what he said when he was told of that life expectancy, but he did give us cause for hope. And thanks to his aggressive approach, my mom lived another 14 years, was elected to public office, and was the life of the party at my wedding. She was healthy as could be until suddenly and instantly, she died of a heart attack while getting ready for work one morning.

I'll never forget that dear, funny Doc Schofield gave us those wonderful years we never thought we'd have.

He loved hiding out in mom's hospital room talking about our hometowns of Fork and Lake View when people were looking for him! He was tickled that I was a Gamecock but seemed to not understand how anyone could be anything else!

Margaret, you and I met at Carolina a "few" years ago and your name meant instant friendship for me. Your dad was a treasure to so many, especially me - and I know that you were his treasure. I'm so glad he had so many years on this earth. Think of all the lives he's changed! How many of us can say that?

You are in my thoughts. Godspeed, Doc!
