John Sim Obituary

John Anson Inglis Sim II
July 23, 1947 - December 20, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - John Anson Inglis Sim II passed peacefully early in the morning on December 20, 2022. He was 75 years young.
John was born in Long Island, New York on July 23, 1947 to the late John Anson Sim and Doris McFadden Sim. After graduating from Garden City High School, he moved south to run cross-country at Brevard College before transferring to Clemson University, where he participated in a variety of intramural sports.
While attending the University, he was drafted into the US Army where he served as a helicopter medical technician in Vietnam from 1968-1970. After serving his time he was honorably discharged and returned to Clemson to finish his History degree.
Following Clemson, John briefly taught middle school history in Easley, SC before moving to Columbia, SC where he began his career in Sales. It was here that John met the love of his life, Polly, and they were married in a small ceremony at her family home on Lake Murray.
They had two daughters, Rankin and Mattie, of which John naturally became the most devoted and loving father.
John was a devoted Christian and an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, was head of the Habitat for Humanity committee, coached the youth basketball team, and was always present for the blood drives.
John was known for his positive and enthusiastic outlook on life - he never had a bad day or met a stranger. He was eternally gracious and had a way of making other people shine simply by being in his presence. He was a superior golfer, devoted husband, patient father, and dependable friend to all those who knew him.
John is survived by his wife of 37 years Polly Morrison Sim, his two daughters Rankin (Josh) Livingston and Mattie Sim (Sarah Jaynes); and grandchildren Mary Russell, Maggie and Woods Livingston, a brother, Charles "Chuck" Sim (Betsy) of Gastonia, NC and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church on December 29th at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive guests at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John's life can be made to the habitat ministry at Eastminster Presbyterian Church or to St Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the caregivers who made his final days as peaceful and comfortable as possible.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
