I just learned of Dr. Cavanagh's passing, and I am still in shock. He was such a wonderful doctor and even better man. When I got diagnosed with breast cancer, he was the first doctor to really talk to me about the emotional toll the diagnosis and recovery would have on me, and I will always be grateful for that. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Just know that he definitely made the world a better place than he found it.

In my life I have not gone to the doctor when I was supposed to until I met dr.cavanaugh. I finally had found a doctor who acted truly concerned about my health, I will truly miss him. my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Just received a letter in the mail from Peterson & Plante Internal Medicine. When I opened the letter, and read the first sentence, my jaw dropped to the floor and was in disbelief! My Dr for over 20 years was gone suddenly. Dr Cavanagh was one of the few men in my life that I truly can say exemplified professionalism, exuded confidence and most importantly, was a man of compassion and understanding. As great of a physician he was, he was equally a confidant. May GOD be with Dr Cavanagh and his family during these times. To Dr Cavanagh's wife...Have peace in knowing GOD truly has a plan greater than our mortal understanding, and our thoughts go out to you and your family!

A life well-lived is like a light so beautiful and rare that everyone within its glow is blessed because it's there. And though the light goes out on earth, in heaven it shines still, and the beauty it revealed to us lives on and always will. Dr. Cavanaugh was our doctor for many years. I met Joe when we were both around 23 or 24 years old. I worked at the apt. Community he and his family lived in while he was in medical school. I moved to Charleston in 1996 and returned to Columbia in 2011. Needing a new doctor, I remembered Joe and looked him up. He has been my doctor for over two years and just found out about his death today. I am so sad and sorry for his wife, sister and other family. He loved talking about his awesome trips, he loved his family and yes The Gamecocks! He will be greatly missed!

My heart is grieved to hear this sad news today! Had I known, I would have been at Dr. Cavanagh's funeral. He is the first medical doctor that I finally felt comfortable with after losing my firstborn baby 7 years ago. He has been there for me and helped me through a lot of health issues. I'm in shock over his death! May the Lord comfort his wife and family over this tragic death. So sad to lose such a wonderful person at such a young age! Dr. Cavanagh...we will miss you!!!!

I have the utmost respect for this wondeful man and doctor for 20 years. A true credit to his profession. He saved my life almost 6 years ago, when no one else could figure out what was wrong with me because he took the time to follow up on an ultrasouund that another facility failed to. He always cared about what was going on, even when I would just call in. He had the best attitude for his job and I always loved to talk Gamecock football with him. Prayers for his wife and family. Carla: I am so sad for you - for everyone who knew Joe. What a wonderful person. He was so good to me through Catherine's fight with cancer; and took good care of me after ... well just after. I saw him last Thursday. I know from this last year there are no words, so I will say none. I will pray for you; and know that Joe is where my Catherine is.

My deepest sympathy goes out to you all for the loss of such a special man. I had the pleasure of working with "Dr.Joe" (his office assistant) about 16 years ago and we kept in touch up until August last year as he remained both my parents physician. This man had a 'heart as BIG as he was!' He taught me so much and working with him was like being in school again. He often explained things to me and always had time to answer even the 'dumbest' of questions. I had the most respect for him as a physician because he was honest and didn't have a problem telling you when he simply did not know; but would always try to find the answer. He never 'rushed' through his patients and treated each of them as if they were 'his one and only.' One thing I'm absolutely sure of; HE LOVED LIFE, his precious wife Carla and that beautiful blue-eyed dog! "I will miss you Joe Cavanagh!" Much love to you all and you'll be in my heart, thoughts and prayers in the days to follow. May God bless you and comfort you as only He can during this time.
