Joseph Kaufmann Obituary

Joseph Kaufmann
November 10, 2000 - February 11, 2022
Irmo, South Carolina - Joseph Michael Kaufmann, 21, of Irmo, South Carolina, passed away on February 11, 2022, after a courageous fight against cancer. Joseph was born in Columbia, South Carolina to Carol Marie Hodge Kaufmann and John Eric Kaufmann. He was the youngest of four brothers. Joseph graduated from Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, South Carolina and hoped to follow in his brothers' footsteps at Clemson University.
Joseph was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis at an early age. Although his illness required numerous medical appointments, multiple hospitalizations, and a daily medication regimen, he never let his condition dampen his optimism.
Joseph loved being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting with his friends Joel and Wes, fishing at Lake Murray, hiking in Harbison State Forest, and biking at Saluda Shoals Park. He loved animals and took special joy in spotting deer in the woods or along the roads. Joseph always looked forward to trips to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. He expressed a desire to work as a wildlife rehabilitator or natural resources officer, and fostered a number of puppies through a local animal rescue organization, Pawmetto Lifeline. Joseph loved playing sports, especially soccer. He spent hours happily sprinting the fields at the local YMCA and SC United FC.
Joseph enjoyed watching his favorite movies and tv shows with his family. He developed an infectious chuckle as a baby, and never lost his sense of humor through the many trials of his youth. Always a prankster, Joseph never missed opportunities to take photos of his family members when they were not looking (and usually at awkward moments), leaving them to joke that he had a future as a paparazzo.
Joseph loved cooking and grilling, and always looked forward to dining on a delicious steak. He enjoyed his favorites at the Hall family restaurants in South Carolina. Joseph formed close bonds with the Hall family and other friends from the Charleston area.
Joseph loved to travel and enjoyed special trips to Florida, Colorado, and Hawaii. He always looked forward to visiting his grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins over the holidays. Among his favorite destinations was Disney World in Orlando, where he spent hours with family, riding the attractions and trading collectible pins.
Joseph is survived by his parents, his three adoring brothers: Joshua M. Kaufmann, Jacob A. Kaufmann, and Jonathan T. Kaufmann, his beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his cherished chihuahua, Isabella.
Joseph will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends. No one was a stranger to him and he treated everyone with the kindness of a close friend. He was a precious gift to his family and a hero and inspiration to those whose lives he touched.
The family will gratefully accept gifts of flowers in memory of Joseph. Donations may be made to these foundations/organizations in Joseph's honor: The Holy Pursuit's Dream Foundation, organizations dedicated to finding cures and more effective treatments for Crohn's Disease/Ulcerative Colitis and Neuroendocrine Cancer, and also to organizations dedicated to rescuing and caring for homeless animals.

I met Joseph one day at Hall's Chophouse 5 or 6 years ago and from the 1st moment my dear friend Tommy Hall introduced us I knew Joseph was a source of light, love & inspiration for everyone in his life... his family, his friends & even those he had just met.

Joseph never stopped smiling as we talked about music, the Gamecocks & Tigers and even his health struggles... so in turn I never stopped smiling, or laughing, as we chatted. Joseph asked if we could take a selfie together & then asked for my phone number and for a good year or two after that he would send me a text about a show I was playing or ask how I was doing... or even tell me about how he was doing... always hopeful... always kind... and once again even through his text messages I could tell he was always smiling.

I am so sorry to hear about Joseph's passing... I can't imagine the pain & grief all who loved him are feeling right now... and while I realize nothing myself or anyone else can say or do will heal that pain please know that I know from just that brief 5 minute interaction years ago that Joseph was special... he was a light... he was all love.

The world is definitely a bit dimmer without such a sweet young man walking among us, but I like to think the truth is someone like Joseph will always be here with us because of the good he brought into this world... because good matters... every day, every year, forever. Joseph was good... Joseph was love... so... I believe Joseph is still here... & will be here every day, every year, forever. Smiling.

All My Love

I enjoyed having Joseph in my kindergarten class. He always had a smile on his face. I enjoyed talking to him when we ran into each other at Dutch Fork events. My heart breaks for your family but hold on to all those joyful memories. My prayers are with you.

Joseph was a gracious and creative student who worked very hard and went beyond his expectations in art class. His emails were always so friendly and positive and his family was a pleasure. I am grateful to his loving parents and brothers for being supportive of his education and am so proud that he graduated with such high regards. May the family remember all the joy he brought everyone and may the Lord bring comfort to you all. God bless your hearts and minds.

My family and I used to live down the street from yours in Autumn Woods, and although I don´t recall ever formally meeting your family I always saw Joseph riding his bike and walking through the neighborhood. I never once saw him without a smile on his face, and I couldn´t help but smile back when I saw him because he just radiated so much joy. I am sorry for your loss. I will keep Joseph and your family in my prayers.

We are so sorry to hear of Joseph´s passing. It was always a joy to see him playing in the front yard with his brothers. We pray for peace and comfort at this difficult time and rejoice knowing that he is with Jesus. The Corley family (217 Autumn Woods)
