Kendra Cusaac Obituary

Dr. Kendra L. Ogletree Cusaac LEXINGTON - Kendra Lynn Ogletree Cusaac first gave the world joy on September 3, 1969 in Denver, Colorado. She was the second of two children born to Laurence (Larry) Ogletree and Audrey Lee Ogletree. Kendra was called home on Monday, November 17, 2014. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Bethel AME Church (819 Woodrow Street, Columbia) at 11:00 a.m. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home (2930 Colonial Drive, Columbia) has been entrusted with the arrangements. Friends may visit the family this evening at the funeral home from 6-7:00 p.m. Kendra and her family moved to Richland, Washington in 1977. While at Hanford High School, she was involved in gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, drill team, and student government until she graduated in1987. Kendra went on to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. She became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Husky Hostess Program. This program matched high school athletic hopefuls with female students who guided the athletes and their families on their visits to the University. Kendra managed to turn her position into being more than just a pretty face. She successfully recruited each athlete she worked with. She kept in contact with these athletes throughout their collegiate career and is still in contact with many who transitioned into coaching or playing professional sports. In 1991, she earned a B.A. in Psychology. In that same year, Kendra attended the University of South Carolina to get her Ph.D. in Clinical-Community Psychology which she received in August, 1996. During that time, she met and fell in love with Dr. Terrance Lavern Cusaac. After graduate school, Kendra began working as Treatment Services Director at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. She supervised treatment programs for Young Offenders, Sex Offenders, and Female Offenders. In March, 1997 she and Terrance were married in Aiken, South Carolina. In 1998, Kendra started her own practice with offices in Aiken and Columbia, offering clinical and sports psychological services to her clients. In 1999, she became a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science Department and an Adjunct Professor for the Psychology Department at the University of South Carolina (USC). In February 2001, Kendra and Terrance gave the world their own version of joy with the birth of their son Booker. In 2006, Kendra became Consulting Sports Psychologist for the Athletic Department at USC. In addition to individual USC athletes, Kendra was the Contract Sports Psychologist for the Women's Basketball Team, the Track and Field Teams, the Women's Soccer Team, the Women's Golf Team, the Women's Softball Team, and the Women's Equestrian Team. This spring, Kendra was awarded the University of South Carolina Non-Tenure-Track Undergraduate Teaching Award, a career highlight for her. Kendra is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP), the South Carolina Chapter Association of Black Psychologists (SC-ABPsi), and former President of South Carolina Academy of Professional Psychologists (SCAPP). In 2011, when baby Kaiya joined the Cusaacs, the family was complete. Kendra was devoted to her family and always lent an ear or helping hand to others. She enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and spending time at her family's farm in Virginia. Honoring and cherishing her memory are her husband, Terrance Laverne Cusaac; son Booker Cusaac; daughter Kaiya; parents, Audrey Booker Ogletree and Laurence "Larry" Ogletree; brother, Vincent Laurence Ogletree; mother- and father-in-law, Evelyn Cusaac and Howard Cusaac; sisters-in-law, Roneisha (Joe) Hughes and Chasity T. Cusaac; niece, Isabel; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.bosticktompkinsinc.com.

Kendra's legacy has always preceded her. I came to know her as a USC grad student b/c she was a legend among doctoral students in the USC psych dept. We admired & told stories about her. What she accomplished gave us all hope & the courage to dream that we could all attain the successes she achieved. Her voice may have been silenced, but her light will cont to shine brightly & lead others through dark, turbulent spaces. Her legacy will live on forever. Thank you, Kendra for sharing your spirit w/ so many. Travel well.

Dr. Cusaac was such a wonderful professor that I took two of her classes at USC in 2006 and 2007. She was a delightful soul and had a calming presence and warm smile. I always enjoyed talking with her after class and she made time for everyone. I often have moments where I will remember her instruction and the theories she explained to us and how it applies to my work. Her gift of teaching was a powerful one. Beyond theories, she taught her students how to live life - always smiling, kind, compassionate, and joyful! She very truly positively impacted so many lives. I am grateful that I was able to have her as a professor and to know her.

My sincerest condolences and prayers to your family. We are very grateful that you shared her with us!
