He was a son of the late Hassie J. and Thelma Tanner. He was survived by his sister, Charlotte Tanner Kelly of Camden, SC; brothers, Robert Tanner and his wife, Madeline, of Aiken, SC, Marvin Tanner and his wife, Rachel, of Aiken, SC, and sister, Libby Tanner Blake and her husband, Oliver, of Key West, FL. Kenneth lived a rich and full life. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Arnold Tanner. They have six children, Kenneth Earle Tanner Jr. and wife, Johnnie, of Old Hickory, TN, Debra Chavis Roof and husband, Howard, of Lexington, SC, Jeanine Tanner Shannon and husband, Michael, of Kingston, TN, Charles Mark Chavis of Gilbert, SC, Thomas Duane Tanner and wife, Mary, of Lexington, SC, and Darlene Tanner Heger and husband, Paul, of Pelion, SC. He had 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Kenneth was a strong Christian man who lived the example that we all should aspire to follow. He was a faithful servant of Pelion Church of the Nazarene, as he was in all the churches that he attended throughout his life. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, bowling, golf, and anything else that allowed him to share time with his family.
Kenneth spent his early years in Georgetown and Winnsboro, SC, where he developed a deep love of Southern gospel and bluegrass music. This continued as he spent much of his adult life in West Columbia, SC, and his final 25 years in Pelion, SC. Many times throughout the years he was seen heading to a “singing” or “pickin.” His loving personality and warming smile will be missed by all who came into contact with him. He never met a stranger. He said “a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.”
There will be a memorial service only at Pelion Church of the Nazarene on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. The church is located at 474 Pine Street, Pelion, SC 29123. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Pelion Church of the Nazarene. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

To all the Tanner family, we were saddened to hear of Kenny's passing. He has been a friend for many years, starting out in Winnsboro at the Church of the Nazarene and then seeing him again at the Pelion Church of the Nazarene. We will miss his smile. Myrtle will miss him teasing her and giving her a big hug at church. Our prayers are with you all.
Love, Myrtle Holbrook, Christine, and Pearl

My family is very sorry to hear of your losing Kenny. There never was much contact except at family reunions, but we always looked forward to our visits at that time. He always appeared happy and content with his life. I know he will be missed by all. Knowing (and loving) Uncle Hass and Aunt Thelma, I knew he also loved his God. So sorry we can not be with you at this time.

We will miss our brother Ken in many ways that we don't even realize as yet. Ken was a fine, honest, moral man who cared about others more than he cared about himself. His family was his life and he raised a truly extrodinary family. Through all of life's trials, his faith was his strength and we know that he has gone to HIS great reward. We will miss you, Ken, and we will always love you.

He is happy, well and having the time of his life with those who have gone before him. As you know, we are and always will be here for you. We are remembering you and your family in our prayers.
