Larry DeWalt Obituary

WEST COLUMBIA - Deacon Larry DeWalt Sr. went on to glory to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 10, 2008. He was a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, mentor, role model, teacher, encourager and an inspiration to all he came in contact with throughout his life. Most of all, he was a born again, baptized believer, a child of the most High God.

Homegoing Services for Deacon DeWalt will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2008, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 1540 Frye Road, Columbia. Mr. DeWalt will be place in the church at noon Monday. The Reverend Dr. Stanley E. Marshall will officiate the celebration.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is honored to be assisting the DeWalt family with the arrangements.

Born June 15, 1950, he was the beloved son of Julia Taylor DeWalt and the late Eugene DeWalt, and a devoted husband to Patricia McCoy DeWalt with whom he celebrated 39 years of marriage August 24th, 2008. Larry was educated in Richland County Schools and graduated in 1968 from C.A. Johnson High School. He was a dedicated employee of USCO, Inc./Hughes Supply, Inc. for more than 31 years.

Mr. DeWalt became a member of Jehovah Baptist Church November 18, 1995. During his tenure, he served in various capacities. He was a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, former President and member of the Brotherhood, and member of the James M. McQueen and Sanctuary Choirs. In January 1999, he was ordained a Deacon. He worked diligently with the youth ministry, inspiring them with the same words of wisdom as he did his children and grandchildren. During his illness, his strong faith was evident. He never complained, but accepted his situation with complete trust in God. His positive attitude has been and will continue to be an inspiration to his family and friends.

Deacon (“Pops”) DeWalt is survived by his wife, Patricia (Trish Ann) McCoy DeWalt, of the home; sons, Larry DeWalt II of Durham, NC, and Antoni Bakari (Jackie) DeWalt Sr., daughter, LaTasha (Raymond) DeWalt-Canada, both of West Columbia, SC; Four grandchildren, Antoni Bakari DeWalt Jr. (B.J.), Chanel Jackson, Jackara DeWalt, and Jalen Canada, his mother, Julia Taylor DeWalt, sisters, Barbara (Robert) DeWalt Tucker, Betty (Nelson III) DeWalt Jones, all of Columbia, SC; spiritual daughter, Tammie L. Marshall; uncles, aunts, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, other loving relatives, his church family and dear friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

The DeWalt family would like to thank those who have prayed, offered support, and have been apart of his journey. He loved spending time with his family, held them close and constantly told them how much he loved them. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 1540 Frye Road, Columbia, SC 29203.

I worked with Larry for over 14 years at Hughes Supply. He touched my life in amazing ways. He was always willing to lend a shoulder or an ear and sometimes both. I looked up to him as the father I never had and will miss him beyond belief. My heart goes out to Mrs. Pat and all of Larry's family. I know his legacy of helping others will live on in his wonderful grandchildren that he so greatly inspired. I feel that I am a better person for having known Larry.
I will miss him greatly but know he is in a better place.

Words seem completely inadequate to express the how sorry we were to hear of the "earthly loss" of our much beloved Deacon Dewalt. We express our most sincere condolences to the entire Dewalt family. Deacon Dewalt was one of the dearest persons for whom I had the distinct honor of meeting. His walk with the Lord was evident in all that he said and did. He clearly exemplified the character that reflected Whom he so willingly and diligently served each day.

Please be comforted by the fact that while his earthly walk has ended--his heavenly walk has only just begun. Know that you are all surrounded by a distinctive cloud of witness who stand with each of you and continually pray for you as well. Allow our Precious Holy Spirit to do His job of being the Comforter. As you walk through this grieving process, continue to lean on Him as well as on those for whom He has chosen to surround you with each day. His Grace, like His Power is as unlimited as it is inexhaustible. God would have never allowed you to face and come to this season if He were not going to bring you through this season as well.

Know that we stand in agreement with all of the righteous prayers going up before the Lord on your behalf. If you ever need anything please feel free to contact us. Know that as an act of our will we lift you up in earnest prayer as you walk through this most painful of times. May the God of all Comfort continue to shower each of you with His love, peace and strength at this time and always.
