Marie M. Epps

Marie Epps WHITMIRE - Having been blessed with 96 years of a wonderful life, Marie M. Epps was called home to rest on February 16, 2016. Marie was born July 12, 1919, in Whitmire, SC, and was united in marriage to the late John B. Epps for 70 years. Their union was blessed with eight children, 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Marie, through her work with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., educated elderly citizens to read and write to pass a literacy test and become eligible voters. She and her husband were entrepreneurs, as they opened and operated an upscale diner/restaurant in the black community that provided an outlet for youth. Marie was a devoted Christian full of praise, love, joy and happiness. She was a member of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church located in Whitmire, SC. Funeral service will be held at New Hope Baptist Church, (Whitmire, SC) on Saturday, February 20th, at noon followed by interment in Cedar Grove AME Zion Church.
