Prentice Taylor Obituary

Prentice Moye Taylor COLUMBIA Prentice Moye Taylor, 84, of Columbia, SC, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and devoted Carolina Gamecocks fan died on Friday, April 7, 2017. Born in Nichols, SC on May 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Leo Rogers and Lillian Glenn Taylor. For 47 years, he was a faithful attendee of Mill Creek United Methodist Church (MCUMC). Prentice greeted everyone with a ready smile and a joke; he never met a stranger. In his early years Prentice was a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a sports lover who played baseball at Wingate University and coached the women's church softball team. After graduating from Wingate, serving two years in the United States Army, and graduating from the University of South Carolina, Prentice worked in the welding supply business. Surviving are his devoted and beloved wife of 47 years, Betty Watkins Taylor; daughters, Rebecca Hatfield, Maria Cantwell and Jennifer Taylor; son, John (Tina) Miner, Jr.; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Maxine Taylor Hudson; sister-in-law, Rebecca Taylor; and a host of nieces, relatives and friends, who will miss him dearly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Leo Rogers Taylor, Jr. and brother-in-law, Dr. Herschel C. Hudson. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at MCUMC, 1401 Old Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC, 29209, followed by a reception at the church's Holler Building. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MCUMC. Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park is assisting the family. The family thanks the wonderful doctors, nurses and other staff at Palmetto Health Richland for their deep compassion and dedicated care; and their pastor, Shay Long and her family for their love and support. Growing up with my best friend Maria, and living right behind their house, I spent many days at their house. I love Betty and Prentice. One of the nicest, loving couples I've known. Prentice ALWAYS had a big grin on his face. He liked to cut up with us kids and make us laugh. I'll never forget how he always brought home the best snacks, and being deprived at my house of treats, I was always happy to accept them at his house. He would take me, my brothers and his kids for rides in his station wagon with the tailgate down and us sitting back there with our feet dangling. We thought that was so cool. I have so many fond memories of Prentice. I'm so thankful to have known him and to have been around him while growing up. I love that family and am praying for each one at this time.
