Dr. Richard E. Bailey HARTSVILLE - Funeral service for Dr. Richard Edward Bailey, 82, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Ladell Humphries and the Rev. Dr. Don Purvis will officiate, with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Dr. Bailey died Sunday, April 13, 2014. Born in Alamance County, NC, he was a son of the late Cecil H. and Lessie Woods Bailey. He received degrees from Elon College, Luther Rice Seminary and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He began preaching at the age of 15 and retired as pastor of North Hartsville Baptist Church after 37½years of service. He was a former English teacher at Hartsville Junior High School, former member of the Darlington County School Board of Educaton with 16½years of service, and the 1999 Civitan of the Year. He had currently been serving as a member (since 1977) and secretary of the Board of Directors of the Southern Mutual Church Insurance Company and pastor emeritus of North Hartsville Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lily Mae Mims Bailey of Hartsville, SC; son, Dwain (Sallie) Bailey of Hartsville, SC; two daughters, Fran Langley and Shan Brown, both of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Hilda Mitchell, Elizabeth (Jack) Hundley and Mildred (Milton) Clapp, all of Burlington, NC; granddaughters, Samantha Brown and Danielle Brown (Lee O'Neal).
