Of all the things you said and the plays you called, nothing stands out to me quite like "Call me Bob," which is what you said to whomever had the pleasure of meeting you. We had had some tough years in Gamecock athletics, but we can always say we had one of the greatest broadcasters to ever sit in front of a microphone. Thanks for the memories and Go Cocks forever!

Bob Fulton was the consumate professional announcer. Like Vin Scully has stated, the radio announcer is like an artist with a full canvas to use. He painted pictures of USC contests and you had a great view of the game even though you weren't in the stadium or the coliseum.

I grew up as a die hard Gamecock fan and can vividly recall listening to so many football games called by Mr. Fulton. Regardless of where you were, he made you feel like you were right there in the stadium watching the game with him. I grew up, went off to school at Clemson and am now a Tiger, but I will always have the greatest respect for Mr. Fulton and what he brought to the USC and all the folks who knew him. I never met the man, but I did sit a few booths down from him at Fatz in Lexington a couple years back. I heard his awesome voice and of course knew exactly who it was without having to see his face. That was a pretty cool experience for me. Rest in Peace Mr. Fulton, you will be missed!

As a former USC basketball player (1960-64),Iam greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Fulton. He was a GREAT announcer for USC ahletics(there will never be another like him OR AS GOOD),a very considerate
person who really cared about USC and its athletes, and, most importantly a wonderful person.I was always amazed at
how upbeat he was ,and how he always
remembered my name and events that happened many ,many years after the fact.He always made me feel welcome and important when I returned to Columbia, and he will be dearly missed.

I knew Bob many years from the time we did the morning show on the old WCOS in the Cornell Arms up to the present. We had so many good times its hard to recall them all but one I do remember...Bob was one of the hardest people to break up on the air, but one night we were doing a Columbia Reds game from the studio via western union telegraph. WCOS studios were converted from apartments and part of the apartment left intact was the shower locatwed off the news room. Bob Truer had just come back from covering a news story and decided to take a shower. When he finished he wrapped a towel around his head and with no shirt and just his shorts on, danced into the control room in the middle of the play-by-play. The only time I ever saw Bob completely break up. You will be missed old timer...I'll be up there and we can all each other by our friendly name 'dad' again. Go Gamecocks.

My daughter and I had the pleasure of meeting "The Voice" in Spartanburg, SC at a book signing in Feb. of 97. We had our picture made with him and he signed his book for me. He was the best sports announcer I've ever heard, using his unique voice to the delight of thousands of Gamecock fans and others.
Rest in Peace my friend, you will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. My Father, Tony Torre Sr., and Bob were friends for many years.
I remember when I was a kid my dad would take me to a much smaller Carolina stadium after his band played for a pre-game party. I'll never forget the excitement of hearing Bob call the games!
The down side...I always left with splinters in my rear from the wooden seats.

We will all surely miss him.
May God Bless you and your family.

Bob Fulton was indeed the Voice of the Gamecocks. My husband and I would go to the Carolina games and he would listen to Bob on the radio. This indeed is a sad day for Carolina.

Robin and Nancy,
I have many fond memories of coming to that house in Belvedere. I loved your Mama and Daddy very much. When I worked for Estee Lauder at Belk downtown. Your Daddy would come to eat lunch there. He purchased shaving products from me several times. I was honored because he would come by and ask about my family so many times. I can hear him right now "How's my friend E.D"? (Daddy died 2 1/2 years ago)And your Mom?(Mama died 8 years ago) I will miss our visits. We would run into each other often. He would also keep me up to date on you two. I'm so glad that the last time I saw him I told him exactly what I've share with the two of you. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayer.

We have lost a neighbor and dear friend. His presence as a person of integrity extended far beyond the airways over which he broadcast for almost half a century. A few years ago, at Ryan's Restaurant in West Columbia, he finished his meal and walked up to me, paused, and shook hands, just like the dear friend he was. After a few moments of talk, he reached into his pocket and gave me a copy of his tape cassette with some of his broadcast highlights on it. He said "This is for you; I hope you enjoy it." What a thoughtful act that was. As a longtime faculty member at USC, Bob has always been a part of our life - and always will be. Thank you, Bob, for being a faithful friend, a gracious gentleman, and a preeminent sports broadcaster. You will never be forgotten by the people of this state or the University of South Carolina. Rest in peace, friend and neighbor.

Words cannot express the sadness that has touched the Gamecock Nation. I'm sure Bob could find words to describe it. What we all would do to here those Majestic words one more time, "Hi Everybody, This is Bob Fulton!" An icon to Radio that can never be duplicated. No other voice has described Carolina like Bob's. Bob is probably the reason that I'm a Gamecock. From the age of two, every Saturday during football season, Bob Fulton brought me joy, happiness, excitement, and even disappointment with his beautiful art with words! It always seemed to be OK to "Wait till' Next Year" when Bob was saying it. So Bob, I'm sure God has found a special place for you in Heaven. And I bet that it is using your "Voice." So I say farewell beloved Gamecock, you have signed off the air, but you will forever be treasured in our hearts!

November 5, 2010

Like so many, I was raised on the familiar voice of the Fighting Gamecocks and the Columbia Reds that made radio listening as enjoyable as watching the games on TV, with the sound turned down. Many nights I have turned on my car radio while living in Georgia and Florida, searching through the static for the voice of Bob Fulton. He was the the most imformative, the most loved and has been the most missed of any sports voice during the lives of most Carolina and Red's fans since the early 50's. We've missed you for a long time, Bob Fulton. We'll recognize that voice when we hear it in the hereafter. Robert Bone - Utah

To Bob's family, am so sorry for your loss. I remember all the good times in Belevedere and the wonderful "Gamecock" picture that he gave Mack, Jr. Will always remember your mom too. She was a wonderful friend when Mack, Sr. was in Viet Nam. We shared so much. Also remember the kiss, Robin, when I looked out the window and saw you and Mack, Jr. Having you just around the corner was great as we came to Columbia knowing noone. Mack, Jr. and Melinda (Missy) share your grief. Mack, Sr. died Jan 18, 2010. We have walked in your mocasins so to speak. Love, Dee Mitchell & family

To Bob's family, and the entire Gamecock nation, I send my sincere condolences. I shared the microphone with Bob on several occasions since we met in the fall of 1976 when Duke played in Columbia. Whether the game was in Columbia or Durham, I knew I could count on hearing that baritone voice and being greeted by that engaging smile. I learned a lot from our chats and listening to his call of South Carolina games. 'Icon' doesn't go far enough in describing Bob. Rest in peace my friend. You are calling God's games now.

I can say that I never met a more wonderful man. Bob was full of the best stories and I could listen to him for hours. Bob talked about his family and how wonderful they were from his two daughters, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He always said that he had a great life and had enjoyed every bit of it. His love for people was wonderful. It seemed that his door was open to talk to and be with others. Bob loved Carolina and Carolina loved Bob. Bob could relate to anyone-anywhere and when you heard his voice, everyone knew who it was. I enjoyed reading his books and sharing stories he wrote with others. He gave so much and will never be forgotten. I am lucky to have known him. He was wonderful!

As a transplant from Poland who came to Columbia in 1981 and a young boy who could not speak English, I found solace in the fact that this must have been a great city because of the enormous stadium it had where they played soccer, Williams Brice :). Shortly there after Bob became my personal guide into adventures of gamecock athletics. There were many Saturdays when I was raking leaves and Bob would come through my walkman and do play by play just for me. Bob became the soothing voice of a grandfather that I could no longer talk to on regular basis. Bob was Gamecock Athletics. Since the day Bob did his last game (CARQUEST Bowl) the games have not been the same and they never will be.

I was fortunate to meet Bob and see him multiple times around Lexington and tell him how much he meant to me in my childhood. My fondest memories of Gamecock sports were shared with Bob via the radio and I will cherish those till the day that I die.

I got to know Bob when I was at USC, and was in the Student Senate. While I was in the Student Senate, I was Chairman of the Student Athletic Committee, and that is when Bob and I got to know each other, and became good friends. Bob always reminded me to put my on desires aside, and truely represent the students at USC, when it came to Athletics, and their concerns. I have tried to follow his advice thru my life, and I thank Bob for his wisdom, and friendship. To his family, friends, and Carolina Community, we have lost a dear person, and I am sure that when Bob gets to heaven, once the trumpets blow, he will hear the Carolina Fight Song, and see all of his Carolina Friends once more. God bless you Bob, and thanks for all the great memories.

I can't really say that I know much about Bob Fulton, probably because I am a die hard Clemson Fan, but there comes a time, where the Orange and Garnet hold hands and remember someone who was so special to Gamecock Nation. I send my deepest sympothy to the family of this much loved gentleman. It is my prayers that you can take comfort in knowing that God has a spot for Mr. Fulton in Heaven. As a Columbia native and Carolina fan, I grew up listening to the "Voice of the Gamecocks". During my career as a flight attendant, I was able to carry the Carolina football team on their away games for many years. It was always a pleasure to have Bob Fulton as a passenger on those flights. Gamecocks everywhere have lost a real gentleman and true friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the Fulton family during this difficult time.

I grew up listening to Bob on the radio when I was growing up. Actually up to the early nineties most games were on the radio and I really enjoyed listening to them. I always remember a high spiraling punt or a players named called. " Jerry Inman a sophomore from Ft Myers Florida. A person like Bob only comes around maybe once in a lifetime. I once introduced myself to Mr.Fulton at a basketball game a few years back. We spoke about the Mcguire era and the ACC era. He can never be replaced and will always be what carolina stands for. Though I have been a Clemson Tiger fan most all my life, one of the first voices I heard announcing sports on the radio was that of Bob Fulton. What I remember most was how he and Jim Phillips, the great voice of the Tigers for 36 years, joined forces to form a statewide radio network to broadcast Clemson's AND Carolina's games in the College World Series many years ago. Hearing them call those games, if you didn't know who they were, you wouldn't have known who they wanted to win! The professionalism of Bob and Jim both was a joy for me to hear, and all of us in the Palmetto State can be grateful for having two of the greatest announcers of all time in college athletics in our state for such a long period of time. Carolina fans will miss Bob Fulton, and so will Clemson fans like myself. God Bless Bob's family.

"A high spiraling, booming kick".Bob Fulton was the link to the imagination of so many Gamecock Fans. He painted the picture of so many athletic events so vividly and always with objectivity. There are so many memories, but ironically, in my view, the best of Bob Fulton was his play-by-play of the Carolina/Clemson game after the death of Clemson announcer Jim Phillips. Bob, in honoring the rival's beloved voice became "the Voice" for both. So touching, and so like the Bob Fulton that everyone remembers. God speed Mr. Fulton!

November 4, 2010

The year was 1961 and I was on the West Columbia all star baseball playing in the World Series of Little Boys Baseball at Lookout Mtn., Tenn. First nite of the series we played Hueytown,Al team and beat them 5-4 on a homerun by yours truly. My father had to work, so he listened to the game on radio that Bob broadcast. I only found out couple of years ago from Bob that he wasn't at the game, but did one of his re-creation with sound effects and was actually in Columbia. Our seeing each other in and around Lexington made our friendship and ties to young 12 yr old many years ago. Bob's voice is like therapy to all in the Gamecock nation, and that will never be forgotten. Sonny Robinson, Lexington, SC

I only knew Bob from his radio broadcasts, but he was a broadcaster from another time - a time when they used to describe the weather, the scenery, and even if the action was from their left to right or vice versa. And all while decribing the action going on. Bob was one of the best at making us feel as if we were there right beside him. So, is it any wonder that even those of us who didn't know him personally feel as if we've lost a friend? Thanks for welcoming us to "sit" along with you for so many wonderful moments.

As a ninth grader at University High School in 1955, I remember Bob Fulton as a DJ on WCOS Am. His voice was distinctive and is probably why I don't remember any of the other DJs of that era. I have said many times I would rarther listen to Bob on the radio than to listen to anyone else broadcasting on live TV. He will live forever as a legend in sports broadcasting.

Bob was a man who helped me tremendously early in my career. That guidance is something I have always cherished and Bob did it out of his own heart, which was bigger than his voice. I have NEVER heard one single person say a negative thing about Bob's work or about Bob as a person. That is extremely rare and it's a testament to the man he was. He's calling one heckuva game in heaven right now. He's calling it as only he can and those who listen have goosebumps.

I WAS THE PA ANNOUNCER ONE YEAR DURING THE 1950'S FOR THE COLUMBIA 'REDS", AND BOB FULTON DID THE BROADCAST. AFTER THE GAME, WE [JULIUS LOVE--OWNER--BOB AND THE FIELD MANAGER] WOULD GO TO A STEAK HOUSE [SHIMMY'S] DOWNTOWN. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE MEMORIES AND WORKING WITH A GREAT ANNOUNCER AND ALSO A GREAT PERSON. GOD BLESS AND RIP MR. FULTON.

The game would end and Frankie would wait breathlessly for his "daddy" and "Bob Fulton" to send him off to sleep. "Carol Ann can put you to bed now" dad would mutter and Bob would follow with a warm, "Goodnight Frankie, daddy will be home soon!"........Peace would blanket our house after what usually was a nail biting game against another ACC opponent. Bob would have called an exhilirating race to the winners circle and most of us listening to the radio were physically and mentally exhausted! Every move, every missed shot, crowd responses, coaching tactics, official's blowing a call, "Frank's" reactions.............Bob never missed a moment to draw his listners into the game as if they would have a direct impact on its outcome! My life with Bob Fulton is not based on his magnificent voice or his ability behind a mic..........He was a part of the McGuire family, loved and respected for the man that he was. A stellar gentlman and a sweetheart of a friend. Bob's generosity had no limits and until he was personally satisfied that all was as it should be for whomever he was helping, he would do everything in his power to find a resolution. I know, because he helped us. We have not lost a legend, legends live on............we've lost his presence, his heart, his thoughts, and his place at our table. A vacancy that was once filled by my mother, Pat, my father, Frank, my son Patrick and my beloved brother Frankie. I can't call him today and I truly don't like that. However with knowledge that he is no longer "alone" or in pain, I am consoled. Michael our son, John and I were with Bob until midnight the night before he left this world. We were watching the elections and Bob was upset that a phone call he was expecting had not come through as promised. He was a man whom did what he said he would do and could not understand anyone not demonstrating the same respect. He spoke about so many things that night, a conversation that will forever be etched in our hearts. His appreciation and love for Ron Morris and his family, his admiration and love for Casey Manning.....his beautiful daughters, their children, grandchildren and great grands. He spoke of loyalty, character, faith and relationships. He wanted to travel and to have a companion whom he could share his remaining days with. Why is it that some people feel because you are regarded as a legend or some sort of icon that you're not just as human as anyone else? He had a chair, a television and a door always adjar in hopes of your visit. A man who ascribed to "there you are" instead of "hey, happy to see me?" We were so blessed to have stopped by, a piece of cheesecake in hand from Ted the owner of "Flight Deck" where we had stopped for dinner. A place that Bob loved to go to with Stan Smith and Jim Holderman, not just for the great food but because Ted and his family are genuinely kind. So now, with a heavy heart, it is my turn to say what you always said to Frankie. "Goodnight Bob" rest well and go safely home where an even greater door is open and waiting for you.

I am a huge Gamecock fan and when I heard that Bob Fulton passed I could not believe it, I had tears come and had to close my office door. Bob Fulton was one of the nicest people I have met. The first time speaking to him and shaking his hand was when he came to Covenant Presbyterian Church. I was in junior high. I didn’t see him as he entered the church but I heard his voice and I looked at my parents, with a smile on my face, and my Dad put his finger over his mouth for me to be quiet but as soon as church was over we went over to welcome him to our church. He was so nice and he took the time to speak to everybody. He had a smile that would light up a room.

My Dad would turn the sound down on the TV and turn on the radio because he loved to hear him call a football or basketball game. I started doing the same thing when I got older. Bob Fulton had such a rich, welcoming voice, he never met a stranger and he always took the time to speak to you. He will be missed. He was and will always be “The Voice of the Gamecocks”. My heartfelt condolences go to the Fulton family. Please know that you are in my prayers.

Bob, I cherished our friendship we had since 2005 when I first met you at Fatz Cafe. Both myself, Chief, and Mrs. Kate will miss you greatly. I enjoyed our time together and loved every minute of the stories you told me. I am saddened that I didnt get another opportunity to see you again before you left us. We will all miss you.

My first thought when I heard the news was of my father, and attending many games, football and basketball as a boy and a man. Bob Fultons voice takes me back to wonderful memories of our family's devotion and loyalty to the Gamecocks and times spent together over the years. Thanks you Bob Fulton for those times I get to remember. May God bless your family at this sad time. Steve Roberts "Class of 1983"

I grew up in a Clemson household, but became a Gamecock fan listening to Bob Fulton, in the late 60s, early 70s, broadcast the basketball games at night on my little transistor radio. Thanks for the memories Bob!

I grew up listening to Bob broadcast Carolina games on the radio and was thrilled to get the chance to meet him in person at Carolina. What a fantastic person! Broadcasters come and go, but Bob will always be our "Voice." Here's to you for a life well-lived! We've lost a member of the Carolina family, but heaven has gained a wonderful person.

I will always remember "The Voice" calling the memorable McGuire Era basketball games over the AM airwaves when many of the games were not telecast. Who could ever forget Bob Fulton's voice broadcasting the football win at Michigan? Godspeed to Bob and God's Peace to his family.
