He was born in Savannah, Ga., May 18, 1931. He was the son of the late Sumner Whitfield Perry Sr. and Ruth Newton Perry.
He attended Wofford College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Upon returning home he began his banking career with the Bank of Greenwood and was with them for 38 years through many changes, those being State Bank and Trust Company, Bank of America, a merger with North Carolina National Bank and then merging into now Bank of America. He received his banking degree from L.S.U..
During his lifetime he was a member of numerous organizations, some being Kappa Sigma Fraternity, American Institute of Banking, The Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Chamber of Commerce, Lion's Club, Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Robert Morris Association and others. He was a member of Trenholm Road Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Eleanor Claire Courtney Perry from Aiken, S.C. Their four children and grandchildren are Sumner W. Perry III of Micanopy, Fla., and daughter, Autumn, Helen Victoria Perry (Teresa Martin) of Irmo, S.C., Lawrence Lanier Perry (Annika) of Decatur, Ga., and sons, Alexander and Christopher, David Michael Perry (Martha) of Gilbert, S.C., and sons, Evan and Austin, and daughter, Monika.
His loving sister, Dorothy Perry Brawley resides in Newport, Tenn. Nieces and nephews are Dorothy Elizabeth, Bolling, Laura, Gaston and Donald, plus nine great-nieces and nephews.
He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. He spent each weekend with his family fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, skiing, and picnicking on the Congaree River and Lake Murray. We will always cherish these memories. They made us who we are.
The family wishes to thank the staff of NHC for their compassion and dedicated care he received. They truly have become part of our family.
Thank you also to Tri-County Hospice for their guidance, support and care during our journey.
The body will be cremated and ashes will be held and later placed with those of his wife in an Eternal Reef placed off of Charleston Harbor.
