Thomas Moody Obituary

Thomas Franklin "Tommy" Moody, Jr.

July 28, 1951 - October 17, 2023

Columbia, South Carolina - Thomas Franklin "Tommy" Moody, Jr., 72, of Columbia passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. Born in Columbia on July 28, 1951, Tommy was the son of Thomas Franklin Moody, Sr. and Margaret Browder Moody.

Tommy is survived by his daughters Kasey Elizabeth Moody of Columbia and Jamie Allyson Moody (Gabriel Hargett), grandsons Weston DeVan Hargett and Anderson Thomas Hargett of Asheville, NC, his sister Linda Moody of Columbia, and his friend and the mother of his children, Jan Moody of Columbia. He is also survived by his nephew Bobby Long (Sarah) and their children Claire and Colleen Long of Anderson, SC and his close friend Bonnie Boland. Tommy was predeceased by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Bob Long.

Tommy was a multi-sport standout at AC Flora High School and was a proud graduate of the class of 1969. Because of his lifelong love for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, he joined the baseball team as a walk on, eventually earning a scholarship and graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration. Tommy became a sales representative for General Mills and for the past 23 years lived out his childhood dream of broadcasting for Gamecock Baseball. He became a media sensation on 107.5 "The Game," hosting multiple shows and using his voice to touch many lives throughout the community.

His love for sports could not compare to his love for his family. He was happiest spending time with his two daughters and his grandsons, who were his pride and joy. Tommy shared his passion for music, the beach, tailgating and endless trivia with his many beloved friends. Just last year, he checked off one of his "bucket list" trips with his daughters to the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown, NY.

Tommy impacted many lives through coaching, his love of sports, his devotion to his friends and his unwavering faith in Christ. Although his family, friends and Gamecock Nation are left with a tremendous void, he will leave behind a legacy of knowledge, enthusiasm, compassion, love and laughter.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 23rd at Founders Park (431 Williams St. Columbia, SC 29201). Following the service, the family will receive friends on the stadium concourse.

Memorials may be made in honor of Tommy Moody to either Children's Hospital c/o Prisma Health Foundation at 1600 Marion St. Columbia, SC 29201 (Online at prismahealthmidlandsfoundation.org) or "The Tommy Moody Baseball Scholarship" c/o USC Educational Foundation - Rice Athletic Center 1304 Heyward St. Columbia 29208 Attn: Tyson Lusk.

I was shocked to learn of Tommy's passing. Each time I ever saw Tommy, he was always the same pleasant friendly person. His knowledge of sports was legendary. I never tired of hearing him recite plays and actions that had taken place many years ago, but in Tommy's mind they were as fresh as yesterday. My sincere condolences to the family.

My late husband, Jimmy, and Tommy were good friends growing up in Columbia and also afterwards. I remember us subscribing to The Extra Point and the two of them always talking sports and memories when we were together. Tommy was such a nice person! My condolences to Jan and the whole family. Tommy was the best short stop I ever played against. With teams full of future pros in those days, Tommy was the best. Sad to see so many of those greats being lost. Heaven has a new short stop. RIP Tommy.

I'm from Camden. I played against Tommy in Pony league, High School, American Legion and with him at USC. He sent me a Happy 70th birthday video which I'll always treasure. What a great and kind person & what a tragic loss this is. My thoughts and Prayers are with the Family.
