Tom Davis Obituary

Tom Davis SURFSIDE BEACH - Tom Davis passed away on February 26, 2018, at home with his family by his side. Tom was born in Sumter, SC, 1941, to the late Thomas Essly and Martha Neal Ingram Davis. Tom suffered a massive stroke on June 30, 2007, and was not supposed to live through the night. He was not supposed to live the next day, month, year, etc. He was one tough, strong man. He defied the odds with the same wit and sense of humor he had before his stroke. He didn't complain and loved life, even in his altered physical and mental state. You were lucky if you were able to be around him. God is good. He is survived by his partner/wife of 33 years, Cindy Abbott Davis, whom he married despite her being a Clemson girl; daughters Elizabeth Davis Stephens (Steve) of Greensboro, NC; Courtney Davis Hallett (Andy) of Columbia, SC; and son Brian Hucks (Michelle) serving in USAF; and 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Dottie Davis Myers, Sara Merritt, Martha Railey (Larry) and several nieces and nephews. We cannot leave out his 2 precious pups, Maggie May and Murphy. Murphy, all of 4 lbs, was his constant guardian and protector during his last days. Maggie May would support from the sidelines in the recliner. He attended Dentsville High School where he was big man on campus and played all sports and continued to get his Bachelors in History at USC, Columbia. He was a lifeguard at Sequi State Park during high school and college. One of his fondest memories happened in his freshman year at USC while in Navy ROTC and was able to fly to Pensacola, FL and fly a T-34 Mentor, which started his love of flying. He loved flying planes (real ones, models, and computer animated). He was an avid hunter and fisherman, although in later years he went on these trips without guns or fishing poles and boat which perplexed his wife. He simply stated he was too smart to get up that early to sit in the cold outside to hunt and fish, although he stocked all other needed provisions to take for a successful trip with the guys. He was a perfectionist wood worker and could carve, build furniture, and refinish antiques. He was a great cook and pretended to like his wife's cooking to keep the peace. Few knew he was a talented artist. He played golf when he could. There was a time at Edisto Beach a 9 iron ended up in a palm tree and didn't come down, but that's another story. There really wasn't much the man couldn't accomplish, except getting that 9 iron out of the tree. A huge thank you goes out to Amedisys Hospice, being impossible to name all workers individually. Appreciated more than you will ever know. A private ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or a charity of your choice. You may sign the online register book at www.BurroughFuneral, Murrells Inlet, SC. Tom, you will be missed. Go rest high on that mountain. Tom was my neighbor on Eureka St for many years and was a great friend. He was a man's man. I think of him whenever I am working in my shop.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tom's death. Tom and my late husband, Don Crainshaw worked together at Imperial Realty and Don later worked with Tom when he started Tom Davis Realty. I have fond memories of Tom, Don, Walt Yarborough, Tommy Ray and others who worked together and were the best of friends!! Just know you and your family are in my prayers.

Dear Cindy, Brian and family - Please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss! Tom was an amazing husband, father, brother and friend to all who met him. I am very thankful he married the best friend I've ever had and made her so very happy - a woman who became his best friend in sickness and in health!

I value the time I spent with Tommy in our teen years. Though brief, it was full of laughter and fun. He was a loving family man who enjoyed life to the fullest! He'll surely be missed by his loved ones and all who came in touch with him through the years.

Cindy, your obituary made me wish more than ever that I had known Tom. He sounds like someone with whom I would have liked to hang out and to whom I would have liked to talk. I can only imagine how huge of a loss this is to you having been together for 33 years. Please know I will continue to pray for peace and comfort for you and all of Tom's loved ones during this difficult time. Love you.

Uncle Tommy was larger than life to this nephew... he always made me laugh with his constant jokes and stories. I admired the man he was and hoped to be like him when I grew up. He took me and my brother Tommy hunting on occasion... not sure why, I'm sure we were more trouble than it was worth. But, he was a great uncle. One memory I will never forget is when we had a snowstorm back around 1970 or so... we went sledding on the very steep hill next to Blue Cross out by Alpine Rd. Uncle Tommy went way up high on the hill and came down face first hollering the whole way down... then he hit the ditch at the bottom and flipped in the air and landed flat on his back! I think he had back problems after that for a while!
Fearless! I was a little kid then, 59 now and remember it like it was yesterday. I will miss him... Rest In Peace Uncle Tommy

Cindy and family - I wish I could be there to share a big hug. I loved reading Tom's obituary and I really hate that I did not get to hang out with him and Cindy much earlier in life. He definitely sounds like one special guy. Cindy, love you lots and am here if you need anything.
