Virginia Marian Harris Nettles

Virginia Nettles Obituary

COLUMBIA - Virginia Marian Harris Nettles died Monday, July 28, 2008. She will be remembered by many in Columbia as one who loved and cared for children. Through her tireless service “Miss Ginny” was a pioneer in the development of childcare programs at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

Born in Due West, S.C., in 1924 to the late Robert Roscoe and Harriett Agnew Harris, she attended public schools in Chester and Greenville. She graduated from Erskine College and worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a cartographic engineering aide. At the end of World War II, she moved to Columbia and met her future husband of 58 years. She married Joseph Lawrence Nettles, Jr. in 1948 in what The State newspaper referred to as “a wedding of wide social interest.” The reception was held at the home of Virginia Gray, her beloved aunt, with whom she resided. As members of the Forest Lake Club, the Columbia Drama Club and as volunteers at the Town Theatre, the couple enjoyed great fellowship among friends. Ginny and Joe enjoyed hosting house parties at their mountain home, The Lindens, in Hendersonville, N.C.

Ms. Nettles was an active member of the Junior League, working to establish the Columbia Speech and Hearing Clinic. She was a member of the Assembly Ball, the Dianthus Garden Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Harriett Nettles of Mechanicsville, Md., and Virginia Marian Nettles of Columbia; her son-in-law, Thomas Charles Repinning; and two grandchildren, Asta Rose and Paul English Repinning; her sister, Paula Harris Nettles; and nieces, Frances West, Paula Myrberg and Robin Nettles.

The family will receive friends in their home at 1218 Wellington Drive and Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m. in the parlor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. by Larry Bates and Amos Disasa. Donations may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204, or to the Alzheimer’s S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

Miss Ginny was a lovely Southern lady - in every good sense of that phrase.
