Steve went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, in Palmetto Baptist Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, February 12, 1947, Steve was the son of June Williams Sloop and the late Whitson Widenhouse Sloop. He was a proud graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Steve began his long and distinguished real estate career in 1975. He served as the broker-in-charge of the Irmo office of Century 21 Bob Capes Realtors for fifteen years. In addition, he served briefly as broker-in-charge of the Shandon and Chapin offices. He was appointed to the Real Estate Commission in 2002, where he was elected and served as secretary. He was an active member of the Central Carolinas Association of Realtors and had chaired the Professional Standards Committee, on which he had served for ten consecutive years. In 2004, he became a member of the Silver Service Club, and on December 15, 2005, he was awarded the Association’s Meritorious Service Award for his many contributions to his profession. He was also a former member of the Irmo-Lake Murray Rotary Club.
A gentle giant of a man, with uncompromising integrity, Steve loved God, his family, his friends, fellow realtors, and his community. He had a great love of life, the outdoors, and an appreciation for all of God’s creatures. His love of his immediate family was evident in all that he did. He was a legend in Irmo as “Granddaddy” and is leaving a lifetime of memories. His family is devastated, but so grateful that he was part of their lives.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory his mother; his wife and soul mate of 41 years, Carol; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and DeAnna Sloop; granddaughters, Caroline and Sarah Sloop; sisters, Nancy (Charles) Abernethy and Judy (Roger) Winge; nephew, David Abernethy; nieces, Terri Abernethy and Mandy (Josh) Millard; and his faithful, little dog, Max.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Outreach Ministry of The First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Steve will be greatly missed by all.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.

Dear Carol,
Two days ago Sandi and I read about Steve. We are so saddened about his death and I just can't believe it. I have so many great and lasting memories of my four years at Capes in Irmo. To this day I hear his giant steps walking from his office and up to third floor to our weekly meetings. Yes, he was a GIANT of a man in our industry. I am so sorry that we did not hear in time to attend the funeral. This past Sunday I went to church and lit a candle in his memory. Sandi and I will think of offten and support you in your grief. Your friends Sandi and Don Pecic(Lexington, SC)

Carol,
I was shocked and saddened to learn about Steve. We go all the way back to 1975 and over all the years I felt I had some true friends in the real estate business. I've been away for some time now, but will never forget the kindness and support you and Steve showed me when I needed it most. I never knew Steve to be anything but honest and genuine and am truly so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. I know he will be missed by all who knew him. Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family and that I will always cherish the memory of Steve and my years of working with the two of you.

Dear Carol and Steve's family,
Many, many years ago, I enjoyed traveling to dog shows with you, Steve and Nancy and Charles. We especially had fun on the "Snow" trip to Charleston. My thoughts and prayers are with you now. May your memories help you through this time.

Carol and Family-What a terrible loss we have suffered. I met you and Steve when I first came to Columbia in 1983. Steve was one of the finest people I knew, and such a asset to our industry. With such honesty and integrity, and never had and unkind word to say. I will always remember him as soft-spoken, and someone who always gave a smile. God Bless you all.

Carol - My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Your "gentle giant" was truly that - I had the honor of working with Steve for a short period of time in the Chapin office. With so many ways to describe Steve, the one thing I realized very early in getting to know him and will always remember him by was his love for God, his family and friends and his dedication to his work. He was one of a kind - he will be missed!!

Carol, I was saddened to read this morning on the internet here in Mexico of our loss of Steve. He was indeed a great man who lived an exemplary life. All of my associations with you and with him were pleasant when I was at Bob Capes Realtors in the 80s. As you know, you and he and I always sit in the same area at First Baptist Church. I was so happy to see and say hello to you and Steve at FBC on my visit 5 months ago to Columbia from Mexico. My love and prayers go out to you and yours.

I am truly thankful that Steve and I came to know each other at East Mecklenburg High School. For 3 years, we were teammates and friends. Life may have taken us away from each other, but I never forgot him. He was funny, witty and deserved the "Best Personality" Senior Superlative that he received.
He was a good football player and enjoyed the game. He could be counted on to never quit, no matter how lopsided the score. Sure and steady. He was indeed, the best of the best. Rest in Peace, my friend.

It has been my great privilege to have met and worked with so many wonderful people in the real estate business and I count Steve as the epitome of what a leader should be in our industry. Always willing to listen and offer quiet and sage guidance. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

What a beautifully written and accurate attestation to Steve's priorities and impact on people and the community! He will be sorely missed, but obviously remembered through the impact he had on his family, friends, and people in the real estate industry.

Carol, Steve will be greatly missed. Cathy and I extend our deepest sympathy. I have known Steve since we were children, growing up in Hickory Grove. He was a great baseball player, football player and teammate, but above all, Steve was a truly wonderful person, with qualities that many of us admired, and wished we could have. He was a friend, in every since of the word, to everyone he knew. You know how hard he worked to help us sell our homes, in Irmo. Our prayers are with you and the family.
