Mr. Cain was born February 18, 1937, in Columbia, SC, a son of the late William Lowndes Cain, Sr. and Anne Lucas Maybank Cain.
As a Columbia native and life-long resident of Wales Garden, Bill attended local schools: AC Moore, Hand Middle and Columbia High School, class of 1955. Bill earned a Business degree from the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1959. He ran with his childhood friends, known as the "Hill Boys", and told many stories over the years in SAE and the Bozarts.
Bill moved to Atlanta where he worked with his uncle in the Crown Candy Company. Adding to the list of lifelong friends, he enjoyed memorable times in the Nine O'Clocks. Bill loved his time working for the Allied Corporation in the agricultural division, befriending and appreciating his farming clients, and always spoke fondly of this time in his life. Every trip to the South Carolina beaches included checking the crops along the way.
Many adventures followed: riding and horse trading with Wiley Jones, winter pack trips to Alberta with Malcolm McKenzie, and San Juan wilderness with Edwin A. Bauer.
Travel, to Bill, was an enrichment of life. And he loved life. He saw the world. Bill was an avid photographer and he documented his extensive adventures through the US, Europe, Egypt, and Africa through black and white film, which he developed himself.
Bill worked with The Wolfe Company for 45 years as a residential Real Estate Broker. He loved meeting new clients and introducing them to the city he loved, the rich history, the people and its progress. Bill was also an historian. He loved the history of Columbia. He loved the history of the Lowcountry. He loved the history of his family and lineage.
Bill spent half his life on the sidelines of the USC Gamecocks as a photographer. He appreciated the action and excitement and the players. And they loved and respected him!
The second part of Bill's life, perhaps the greatest, began in 1981 when he married Margaret Pope of Mobile, Alabama. They had two daughters both of whom Bill loved fiercely. He was a proud and devoted father and gave his family the most wonderful life. He passed on to his children the gift of travel which allowed them to see the world and its vast history which he appreciated so much.
Bill loved his friends and he loved his family. He loved his Lowcountry, the beaches, and the mountains. Bill never met a stranger. He was a gentleman.
He was a proud father. He often told his daughters they were the greatest joy of his life. He was a humbled and adored grandfather.

Bill is proceeded in death by his parents, William and Miss. Anne Maybank Cain, his nephew, Bishop Daly Pope Garnett, and his beloved cousins.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Pope Cain; daughters, Anne Maybank Cain Kellum (Thomas) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Margaret Taylor Cain Firth (David) of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Margaret Lowndes, Catherine Elizabeth, and Thomas Rees Kellum. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Cain Pope (William Llewellyn) of Columbia; sister-in-law, Leslie Pope Garnett (Taylor) of Aiken; brother-in-law, Banister Pope (Janice) of Boone, NC as well as nephews, William Llewellyn Pope, Jr. of Columbia, Joseph High Pope of Columbia, Thomas Lowndes Pope of Columbia, and Mason Tarpley Pope of Charleston.
The family suggests memorials be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church or Riverbanks Zoo.

I met Bill in Atlanta before we moved to Columbia in 1972. He found us a wonderful home on Woodlake Drive just off Trenholm Road, where we live until all the girls moved out of down. I think of The NineO´clocks and the fantastic times we had as Bachlers back then. We got together in Columbia to hunt for a new home and raise our three girls. Bill found the perfect place, and we lived there until they had moved away. We remained good friends until his passing. We will continue to remember him and his family forever.

Bill was a character in the best sense of the word. Always a fun fellow to run in to. He loved to tell and hear a good story. Thoughts go out to the family.

Willie was my hero in one important way. Except for him, only millionaires could afford to play polo. His rich friends included him on their teams not only for his athletic ability but, more importantly, because of his charming personality. He was much beloved by all.

Bill was a kind friend. He contacted me when he found something which he thought would be of interest to me and he was always right. Among many stories, a favorite was a photo expedition to a remote African desert outpost where the sole game warden wore a Clemson t-shirt.

I first met Bill in Atlanta where we were members of a Bachelor Club called the "Nine O´clocks". We had many grand times at the New Years Eve parties which lasted well into News Years day. We were thrilled to find out that Bill was here in Columbia when we moved here in 1972. He found us our home soon, and became very close friends again. We were very delighted when he married Margaret and both of them became a part of our group of good friends here in Columbia.
