Willis Ross Obituary

Willis Mims ("Bill") Ross

September 28, 1940 - June 26, 2024

Columbia, South Carolina - Willis Mims ("Bill") Ross passed away on June 26, 2024 at the age of 83 in Columbia, SC. Born on September 28, 1940, to John and Jean Ross, Bill graduated from Columbia High School and served in the US Army's 7th Army Signal Support Group stationed in Germany. After his military service, Bill worked as a store manager for Goodyear for more than 30 years. His many customers at the Devine Street, Gervais Street, and Forest Drive Goodyear locations remembered him fondly.

Bill served as both a deacon and elder at Sherwood Forest ARP Church. Bill was a loyal steady hand to his friends and family, always ready with a quick wit, a servant's heart, and his famous boiled peanuts. He was happiest spending time with family, tinkering with things around his house and yard, and watching Gamecock football and baseball. He was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle and "Papa" and will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known him.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anne Henry Ross; his children, Jennifer (Andrew) MacLeod and Stephen (Elizabeth) Ross; his grandchildren, Marjorie MacLeod, Amelia MacLeod and Henry Ross; his sister, Susan (Jim) Haney; his nieces and nephews, Lisa (Brian) Jolliff, Elaine Murphy, Charlie Adams and Rhett Adams (Patricia Moore).

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Adams.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Ms. Robin Taylor and the caregivers from Still Hopes Solutions and Amedisys hospice for their care and compassion for Bill.

The funeral service for Mr. Ross will be held at Sherwood Forest ARP Church in Columbia at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 29,2024, with burial at 4:00 pm at Old Purity Cemetery in Chester, SC. Immediately prior to the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at Sherwood Forest ARP Church at 12:30 pm. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

We had wonderful times together with Anne and Billy and we will miss him.
For many years we looked forward to getting his famous and delicious boiled peanuts. We also enjoyed tail gaiting at the Carolina home football games. Our sincere condolences to Anne and other family members.
