Jimmie Gunter
WALNUT COVE- Jimmie Page Gunter, age 93, widow of Rembert E Gunter, Sr. was born on August 25th 1931 to James G and Birdie C Page in Greenwood County South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Rember E Gunter, Sr., sisters Editha Hartzog, Dolores Jones, and Catherine Bowlen, her brother Grover Page, and daughter Peggie Davis.
She is survived by daughter Beth Gunter (Frank), sons Bert Gunter (Belinda) and Bill Gunter (Jessica), her son-in-law Jim Davis, grandchildren Joe Davis, Tim Davis (Dana), Anita Lowe, Andrea Walskey (Justin), Donnie Davis, Lauren Gordon (Matt), Haley Healy (Chris), Taylor Rogers (Mike), and Kayla Gunter, great-grandchildren Darbey Davis, Jamie Nettles, Dallas Davis, Lee Rivers, Hunter Davis, Eddie Davis, Peyton Davis, Abigail Walskey, R.J. Walskey, Naomi Rogers, Lilly Gordon, Paul Rogers and Sage Healy, and great great-grandchild, Xander Nettles.
Educated in the South Carolina Public School system, she attended Blackville Elementary in Blackville, SC first through third grades. While there she was an academic achiever as well as a standout in relay races and Expression contests, having won county awards in both areas. In 1941, the family moved to Elko, South Carolina where she became a member of the Elko Baptist Church where she was active in the
Girls Auxiliary. She attended Elko Elementary where she was active in 4H Club, graduating from Williston-Elko High School in 1944. Her high school years were devoted to student body activities, cheer leading, and 4H Club. She became an eight-year member of the club – excelling in better farm practices, canning and meal preparation. In 1949, she won a blue ribbon at the State level and dress making and was selected to attend the National 4H Club breakfast in Washing, DC. She was a member of the group that was introduced to President Harry Truman. She was also her school's representative to the second annual SC Girls' State, where she was elected Senator. She was President of her senior class and the faculty choice for Miss Hi Miss. Jimmie was recognized for twelve years of perfect school attendance.
She married Rembert E Gunter Sr. on July 22, 1950. She became an ardent homemaker and the mother of her four children.
Always active in church life, she participated in Sunday School, choir and children's organizations. In 1987, she and two co-workers organized Girls in Action (GAs) and Acteens at Friendship Baptist Church (Germanton, NC), leading the group until 1996.
Jimmie was a poet, storyteller, and a founding member of the Stokes County Writers Group under the direction of Shawn Chereski, Stokes County Arts Council. She was an associate of the Academy of American of Potes and had numerous books of poetry published.
Devoted to family and friends, she enjoyed a full and abundant life.
A graveside service for the family will be held at Friendship Baptist Church on Saturday, April 26th , 2025, at 1:00 pm, Pastor Scott Vernon officiating. The family invites friends to join them for a celebration of life at 3:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, King, NC.
