Dorothea Grivers Obituary

Dorothea J. (Tormey) Grivers, 94, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at The Branches Assisted Living Facility in North Attleboro, surrounded by her children. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Grivers Sr. for 43 years.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Charles Leo and Violet (Sanders) Tormey. She resided in Cumberland for most of her life.

She was proud of her two children and their spouses, Joseph and Jennifer Grivers of Attleboro, MA, and Eileen and Damian Horbury of Bethany, CT. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Sarah and James Horbury, and Olivia and Kate Grivers. She was the sister of the late Charles Leo Tormey Jr.

Dorothea was an accomplished educator with an extensive academic background. She graduated from Holy Trinity in 1944 and St. Xavier Academy in 1947. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from the Rhode Island College of Education in 1951, followed by a Master's Degree in History from the University of Rhode Island in 1957, and another Master's in Speech Pathology from URI in 1976.

Dorothea dedicated 35 years to teaching in the Central Falls, East Providence, and Cumberland School Departments, with over 20 years in Cumberland. She made significant contributions at Cumberland High School, North Cumberland Middle School, and McCourt Middle School.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph Parish in Cumberland and was a member of the St. Joseph Women's Club. She was in the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher's sorority and was a Sapphire Sister. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the St. Aidan Seniors. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband Joe, visiting Europe, the Caribbean, and all over the United States. Dorothea loved reading and going out to breakfast with her fellow teachers. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her beloved family.

Dorothea was supported by many who enabled her to stay in her home for so long. The family would like to thank Comfort Keepers in Lincoln, The Branches of North Attleboro, and Beacon Hospice for their loving care and compassion, as well as close family and neighbors who offered their support. She will be sadly missed by all who remember her sense of humor, vivid memories, and quiet manner.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Dorothea's Life Celebration, with Visiting Hours on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM at the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM at St. Aidan/St. Patrick Parish, 1460 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, 964 Main St, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
