Edwin Whittier Obituary

It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Edwin L Whittier, age 82, at home on April 25, 2025 after a ten year struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

He was the son of the late Edwin L Whittier, Sr. and Mary (Newman) Whittier and brother of the late Joyce (Whittier) Butler. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Videto) Whittier and would have celebrated sixty-three years together in June.

He was raised in Mansfield, MA and was a graduate of Mansfield High School, class of 1961. Ed was retired from Fortifiber Corp. where he was a machine operator and also ran the carpenter shop. He was a long time resident of Attleboro, MA and a winter resident of Port Charlotte, FL. He truly loved Florida and flourished in the warmth of their winters where he treasured the friendships of many wonderful people.

Ed enjoyed life and had many and varied interests. First and foremost he loved his family; nothing gave him greater joy than to be with family. He was well known for his 'Eddie jokes' where everyone else just rolled their eyes while he rolled over with laughter; we tried not to encourage him, to no avail! He enjoyed playing cards and taught his children and grandchildren how to play chess. Ed loved to cook and delighted in teaching his grandchildren who called him 'Buppa'. Of course, the grandchildren loved to eat everything they prepared themselves and named one dish "Apple Buppa' in his honor! Ed was also a motorcycle enthusiast and loved his Yamaha. He loved nothing better than to cruise the countryside on his bike and traveled from Nova Scotia to Florida stopping to visit relatives and friends along the way.

Ed was the 'go to' man in our family; he was the one called upon to fix, move or build any projects that were needed. He had a passion for woodworking; he was a masterful woodworker and built many beautiful pieces of furniture, intricate mouldings, decks and basically whatever was needed. In his older years he and friends formed a carving club where he carved exquisite pieces and delighted in giving meaningful carvings to family members. Ed also loved to travel. With his wife by his side, they traveled to many amazing and interesting places, including our own magnificent country. He was enthralled with the raw beauty of Alaska and the wondrous history of the United Kingdom and Europe. Trips to Canada and Mexico were always enjoyed and he loved the relaxation of cruising. Other than his family, the accomplishment of which Ed was most proud was his commitment to AA. He was a devoted and thankful member and thrived on the nurturing and healing aspects of the program and offered encouragement and support to others along the way. He was a grateful member with over thirty years of sobriety.

Edwin is survived by his wife and children Michael (Robin) Whittier of Taunton, MA, Karen Zito of Andover, CT, and Brian (Pamela) Whittier of Pawtucket, RI, his grandchildren Zachary (Erin) Zito of Bolton, CT, Alexander Zito of Wethersfield, CT, Ashley Whittier of Warwick, RI, Nicole Whittier of Taunton, MA, Adriana (Justin) Otis of East Providence, RI, Tyler Whittier, Alexa Whittier of Pawtucket, RI, Vanessa(Anthony) Montecalvo of Pawtucket, RI and greatgrandchildren Julia Otis and Samuel and Jordan Montecalvo, nephews Conrad Butler of Greeneville, TN and David Butler of Norton, MA, Godchild Lorraine (Annese) Waseleski of Leominster, MA. He is also survived by a special sister in law Jean Mignone of North Attleboro and brother in law Charles Videto of Attleboro, MA and several loved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a gracious thank you to Hope Health Hospice for their unwavering support, kindness, and care. The exceptional care of Casy and Darlene will live in our hearts forever. We would also like to thank the Attleboro Fire Dept rescue team for their help on multiple occasions. Their rapid response, patience and professionalism is gratefully acknowledged.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation on Sunday, May 4, 2025 from 1:00PM to 4:00PM in the Duffy-Poule Funeral and Cremation Services 20 Peck St., Attleboro.
