John Cotter Obituary

John T. Cotter, Jr., ""Jack"", passed away peacefully on January 24, 2022, in Vermillion, South Dakota from complications of COVID-19. He was 82.

Jack was the eldest son of the late John T. Cotter, MD, and the late Dolly G. (Rochester) Cotter, who had resided in Attleboro Falls, MA. Born in 1939 in Pinewald, NJ, Jack lived most of his life in the Attleboro area, only recently moving to South Dakota to be near his son.

A graduate of North Attleboro High School, Jack went on to train as a toolmaker, working for Texas Instruments for many years, then selling carbide tools. In the late 1980s, he lived and worked in Michigan, returning to work locally for F.H. Peterson Machine Corp. He built many lasting relationships wherever he lived.

Jack was a devout Roman Catholic, a member of local churches, most recently Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Seekonk, and St. Agnes, Vermillion, SD. Jack also enjoyed volunteering for the North Attleboro Animal Shelter, Angle Tree Rod & Gun Club, and the Rev. Gordon N. Larson Senior Center. He was a dedicated guitar player, photographer, and volunteer, and had a lifelong love of NASCAR and his dogs Buddy, Johnny, Frisky and Lucy.

Jack married and cared for the love of his life, Judy (Cooley) Pelletier Cotter until her passing in 2018. He was a loving son and brother, spending many years caring for his mother and his sister, Rosemary Fera, who passed away in 2015. Jack was also predeceased by his brother, Charles C. ""Chuck"" Cotter.

Jack is survived by his youngest brother, Joel T. Cotter (Carole) of Asheville, NC, and sister-in-law, Susan Cotter of North Attleboro, MA. He will be greatly missed by his children: Kathleen M. Bentley (David) of Warwick, RI; John D. Cotter (Rhondalee) of Tolland, MA; Joseph P. Cotter of Agawam, MA; Lisa L. Bouvier (Timothy) of Attleboro; Bridgette M. Cobb (Peter) of N. Attleboro; Timothy P. Cotter of Vermillion, SD and his grandchildren, Katelyn V. Bentley and Ethan J. Bentley of Warwick, RI and Capt. Jason D. Bentley, U.S.A.F. and his wife, Jenna, of Tokyo, Japan. He will also be missed by Angela Maskell of Plainville and her children Brendan, Keilli and Dylan. He leaves his former wife, Virginia L. (Nolin) Johnson of Taunton, MA, many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and family members.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Sanford Health Hospital in Sioux Falls and especially the staff at Sanford Health, Vermillion, for their extraordinary care of Jack over the past month.

I´m late reading this. I knew Jack through work. He was a great guy. I always enjoyed when he would call on my company. I could tell he was an honest man. I had lots of laughs with him. It is said that people die twice, once when they draw their last breath, and a second time when their name is uttered for the last time. Jack will live on for a long time.

Jack and I were in NAHS at the same time although I was ahead of him. He and his brother were friends with me. Rest In Peace Jack and I will light a candle for you at Saint Rita´s here in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Jack was one of the best friends I ever had. He recruited me to play the banjo at an annual show of the Attleboro Senior Center, where he was an active volunteer. I then recruited him to our jam band Harmony Gritz, and to serve as my backup guitarist at many shows, most often at Rick's Music World in Raynham, MA. He became a treasured presence everywhere.
