Joseph Morrissey Obituary

Joseph T. Morrissey, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday February 2, 2025.He was the beloved husband of Virginia M. (Vigneau) Morrissey with whom he celebrated 69 years of marriage. Born in Providence on March 14,1931 he was a son of the late Dr. Daniel L. and Rosalind (Beagan) Morrissey.

"JT" enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School and served proudly in Woods Hole and Galveston, TX. He was a member of the IBEW local 2323 while employed as a telephone repairman for New England Telephone for 30 years before retiring in 1991. JT and Ginny both grew up in Elmhurst. Their family lived in Smithfield for 35 years before retiring in Charlestown.

"Little Joe" was a sensational basketball player in his youth playing for the St. Pius CYO Junior & Intermediate (18-19) teams leading them to State Championships (3) years in a row 1948-1950 and was named to the All-New England Tourney team in 1950. He once scored 52 points in a 1950 Intermediate game and captured the league's individual scoring crown that season. JT loved to ride his bike along back roads of home, never missed a chance to go body surfing in Narragansett Bay well into his 70's and shoot baskets with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed rooting for the Friars, Patriots & Sox.

Besides his wife, Virginia, he is survived by his children, Joseph T. Morrissey, Jr. (Susan) of Smithfield, Kerry J. Morrissey of Johnston, Brian G. Morrissey (Mary-Ellen) of Mansfield, MA, Catherine R. Bodell (Joseph) of Wakefield, Carolyn M. Greer (Chris) of Groton, CT and the late Kevin P. Morrissey and Ellen B. Morrissey. He was the brother of the late John P. Morrissey, Daniel L. Morrissey, Jr. and Rosalind M. Flynn. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held Saturday February 8, 2025, at 9:45am from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel of Patrick Quinn Funerals and Cremations, 643 Putnam Pike, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in St. Pius V Church, Eaton St. Providence. Burial will be private. Visitation respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Pius V.
