Susan Ann McDermott, age 60, a lifelong resident of Norton, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2025 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She was able to watch her last sunset out her hospital window, which was truly beautiful that night complete with a rainbow.
Born in Norwood, MA on June 9, 1965, she was the loving daughter of Florence A. McDermott and the late James W. McDermott, who passed away in February 2022. She was preceded in death by her cherished sister Mary McDermott who passed away in December of 2022.
Susie, as she was always affectionately called by her family, grew up in Norton and was educated in the Norton Public Schools and was a proud member of the Class of 1984. She was employed at several places during her too short life including Kilburn Glass, Sinclair Manufacturing Company, Triad Inc. and even McDonald's, all located in Norton. Prior to 2020, she was a longtime volunteer at the Norton Senior Center answering phone calls with a friendly greeting and helping where needed.
Susie was a loving daughter, sister and affectionate aunt to her several nieces and nephews, and she enjoyed spending time with her family and tried to make the most of every day despite having been diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in her mid- twenties. When it came time for a kidney transplant, she was the grateful kidney organ recipient from her cousin Lisa Healey. Despite often being dubbed "the quiet one" at big family or social occasions, you could always count on her to have the biggest laugh when the moment called for it, always complete with her head thrown back and constant giggles after. Susie was a gentle soul and truly cherished her family and friends and will be missed greatly.
Susie was a communicant of Saint Mary's Church in Norton. In her free time, Susie was often found reading, doing several different types of crafts, was a master of 3D puzzles and word puzzles and was often seen around her hometown running errands and reconnecting with friends. Her family also knew she, without a doubt, had the best collection of unique socks that had developed over the decades.
Susie is survived by her dear mother Florence McDermott of Norton and by her siblings and in- laws: Cathy McDermott of Norton, Debbie McDermott of North Attleboro, Janet McDermott of North Attleboro, Pauline Harding and her husband Tom of New Hampshire, Jim McDermott, Jr. and his wife Robyn of Maine and Denise Briody and her husband Mike of South Easton. She was the beloved aunt of Ashley, James, Cody, Samuel, Joshua, Matthew, Emily, Nathan and Cassidy. She was the cherished god-daughter of her Aunt Jennie MacInnes of Billerica, MA.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, October 30th from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp Street (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.
All are welcome to attend her graveside funeral service and burial on Friday, October 31st at 9:00 A.M. at the Newland Cemetery, 70 Newland Street in Norton.
